Rally in response to "National Blood Donation Day April 7, 2024"
(Haiphong.gov.vn) – On the morning of April 4, the City's Voluntary Blood Donation Steering Committee coordinated with Vietnam Maritime University to organize a rally in response to "National Blood Donation Day April 7, 2024".

Vice Chairman of the City People's Committee Le Khac Nam, Head of the City's Steering Committee for Voluntary Blood Donation, along with representatives of relevant departments, agencies, units and a large number of officers, lecturers and students of Vietnam Maritime University attended the program.
In order to provide enough blood and blood products of good quality for the treatment needs of patients on a voluntary and guaranteed basis, in 2000, the Prime Minister issued a Decision to designate April 7 every year as "National Blood Donation Day". Since then, in our country, voluntary blood donation in localities has increasingly progressed, not only in the awareness of all levels, sectors, and people but also in action, with the voluntary participation of a large number of people, especially young people. The forms of propaganda and mobilization are diverse, the work of receiving, processing, and transfusing blood is increasingly safer.
Every year, our country organizes many events such as "Pink Spring Festival", "National Blood Donation Day April 7", "World Blood Donor Day June 14", "Red Journey" with the participation of many provinces and cities to promote and encourage humanitarian, noble and meaningful activities in the lives of the people of the country. According to the World Health Organization, each country or locality needs blood units equivalent to 2% of the population each year; or 1 in 10 patients need blood transfusion or blood products. Currently, most countries in the world only mobilize 30-40% of the blood demand for annual medical treatment.

In Hai Phong city, in previous years, our city was always in a state of blood shortage, especially in early spring and summer. In the past 10 years, with the active attention and direction of the City Party Committee, the City People's Committee, as well as Party Committees and Authorities at all levels, the efforts of the City Steering Committee and localities, departments, units, especially universities and colleges, the amount of donated blood has increased and basically overcome the blood shortage, even during the Covid-19 epidemic. The city has done a good job of propaganda and mobilization and received results that are always higher year after year. In 2023 alone, the city organized 92 voluntary blood donation campaigns, mobilized more than 40,000 people to register for voluntary blood donation and received 31,978 units of blood, reaching 106.6% of the plan assigned to the city by the National Steering Committee, the rate of voluntary blood donors continued to reach more than 97% and the rate of repeat blood donors reached over 70%.

Notably, Hai Phong has mobilized more than 70% of the total number of blood bags collected to donate 350ml of blood, and we have basically overcome the shortage of blood for medical treatment during the summer and Lunar New Year. Hai Phong not only has enough blood to serve medical treatment at the city's hospitals, but also helps provide blood for some hospitals in neighboring localities during times of blood shortage... Over the past 10 years, the voluntary blood donation movement has been organized by 100% of districts in the city, many localities have achieved high results, leaders of the city's branches, districts, communes and wards have joined in and directly participated in donating blood to save people. This is a significant step forward in the city's voluntary blood donation campaign, which has always been highly appreciated by the National Steering Committee and has been awarded a Certificate of Merit by the Ministry of Health and the Central Committee of the Vietnam Red Cross Society every year.
However, compared to the rate recommended by the World Health Organization for prevention of 2% of the city's population, Hai Phong in the past 5 years, despite its efforts, has only achieved nearly 1.7% of the population; the movement has not developed sustainably, and many localities, departments, and units have not yet completed the mobilization targets according to the city's plan.

Speaking at the rally, the Vice Chairman of the City People's Committee, Head of the City's Steering Committee for Voluntary Blood Donation, requested leaders of the city's departments, branches, unions, districts, and universities, colleges, vocational high schools and vocational training schools to actively direct and mobilize a large number of people and volunteers to participate in voluntary blood donation in response to the National Voluntary Blood Donation Day; at the same time, respond to the Letter calling on all people to donate blood voluntarily by General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong and prepare to respond to the Red Journey - Connecting Vietnamese blood, which will take place in May 2024.
He assessed that the Voluntary Blood Donation Festival of Teachers and Students of Vietnam Maritime University today is a promising start for a new change in the city's voluntary blood donation campaign with the determination to exceed the target of mobilizing and receiving more than 30,000 units of blood in 2024.
