To date, several localities across the country have officially announced the Lunar New Year holiday schedule for students in 2026. Notably, in addition to the minimum holiday period, many provinces and cities have chosen to extend the holiday.

According to the lunar calendar, the first day of the Lunar New Year (Year of the Horse) falls on February 17, 2026. Based on the 9-day Tet holiday framework for workers approved by the Government , many provinces and cities have issued or finalized Tet holiday plans for students, with many localities extending the holiday beyond the minimum to better suit the actual situation.

In Hanoi , the Department of Education and Training has officially announced the Lunar New Year holiday schedule for students of all levels in 2026, lasting 5 days, from the 29th day of the 12th lunar month to the 4th day of the 1st lunar month. Because the holiday coincides with weekends, the total number of actual days off for students in the capital city could reach 9 consecutive days. This is a plan that has been applied consistently for many years, ensuring a balance between holiday requirements and the academic year's learning schedule.

Meanwhile, Ho Chi Minh City is aiming for a longer Tet holiday. The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training has submitted a plan to the City People's Committee for students to have an 11-day Tet holiday in 2026, tentatively from the 25th day of the 12th lunar month to the 6th day of the 1st lunar month. This plan is currently awaiting official approval, but if approved, students in Ho Chi Minh City will continue to be among the localities with a long Tet holiday.

Not only major cities, but many other localities have also announced specific Tet holiday schedules. Quang Ninh attracted attention by deciding to give students a Tet holiday from the 29th of the 12th lunar month to the 12th of the 1st lunar month, creating one of the longest holidays in the country. Ha Tinh also issued a plan for students to have a Tet holiday from the 26th of the 12th lunar month to the 7th of the 1st lunar month.

Can Tho has set the Tet holiday for students from February 12th to 22nd, 2026, corresponding to 11 consecutive days. Tay Ninh is giving students an early holiday from the 24th day of the 12th lunar month to the 6th day of the 1st lunar month, a total of 12 days.

The list of localities that have announced the Lunar New Year holiday schedule for students in 2026 is still being updated. Some provinces and cities have finalized their school year schedules but have not yet widely announced the details of the holiday, and are expected to announce them in the near future after final review and agreement.

The decision by many localities to give students extended Tet holidays is considered appropriate given the peak travel season at the end of the year, and also provides students with more time to rest and recharge after the first semester. However, all Departments of Education and Training affirm that the holiday schedule must still ensure the required number of weeks of actual learning, without affecting the quality of teaching and learning.
