Messi admits he's "very tired," but enjoys the record-breaking night as Argentina advances.
Argentina's 38-year-old captain had an emotional match against Austria. He missed a penalty, but then scored two goals, extending his consecutive World Cup scoring streak to six games, helping Argentina beat Austria 2-0 to secure their place in the knockout round.
After the match, Lionel Messi shared:
“I am very happy with this victory. This was an extremely important and hard-fought win, and the whole team put in a lot of effort. This result gives us calmness and confidence for the road ahead.”

The Inter Miami star also had a rather lighthearted reaction to missing the penalty early in the game:
“I had a chance to score from that penalty. But who knows, if I had scored in that situation, I might not have scored the subsequent goals. Nobody knows what the future holds. Anyway, the way things went today was fantastic. I'm happy with the result, with what the whole team showed, and with the team spirit we have.”
When asked what his favorite goal was in his illustrious World Cup career, or what it felt like to officially become the tournament's all-time leading scorer, Messi simply smiled:
"To be honest, I can't remember."
He continued:
"I'm very tired. Right now I don't have much energy left and it's hard to think too much. I just want to enjoy this moment and go back to celebrate with my teammates."

Messi's first goal came in the 38th minute with a one-touch tap-in from a cross by Facundo Medina. This goal equaled the record of 17 goals in World Cups held by Brazilian women's football legend Marta, who holds the record for most goals in the Women's World Cup.
In the fifth minute of added time in the second half, Messi completed his brace. Following a lightning-fast counter-attack, he capitalized on a rebound from his own shot to score the goal that sealed a 2-0 victory for Argentina. This goal brought Messi's total World Cup goals to 18 , officially making him the sole record holder for the greatest goalscorer in World Cup history.
With his brace against Austria, Messi has now scored 5 goals at the 2026 World Cup, moving to the top of the Golden Boot race, ahead of Jonathan David of Canada and Deniz Undav of Germany.
Furthermore, he also equaled a rare milestone by becoming the third player in history to score in six consecutive World Cup matches, matching Just Fontaine of France and Jairzinho of Brazil.
With a perfect 6 points after two matches, Argentina officially secured their place in the Round of 32 with one match remaining.
Messi concluded:
“This is the World Cup. Every match is intense and all the teams are of high quality. We are happy to have earned 6 points and have officially qualified for the knockout stage.”
