Liverpool have opened talks with RB Leipzig and Sunderland regarding the possibility of loaning defender Lutsharel Geertruida until the end of the season.
The 25-year-old Dutch international is currently on loan at Sunderland from RB Leipzig, but that deal could be terminated soon as he moves to Anfield.
Liverpool's interest stems from a squad crisis in the defensive line. Both experienced right-backs, Conor Bradley and Jeremie Frimpong, are injured, while the absence of Joe Gomez and Giovanni Leoni has depleted their central defensive depth. Aside from Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate, manager Arne Slot has very few other reliable options.
Meanwhile, Geertruida is highly regarded for his versatility, being able to play right-back, center-back, or defensive midfielder. A major advantage is that he previously worked with Arne Slot for three seasons at Feyenoord, which would make his integration process easier if he joins Liverpool.
This season, Geertruida has played 17 Premier League matches for Sunderland, including 7 starts, accumulating sufficient experience in a demanding environment.
According to sources, Sunderland are willing to facilitate the deal, similar to Marc Guiu's return to Chelsea previously. Liverpool see this as a sensible short-term addition, rather than a long-term investment, given that the transfer window is about to close.
Following last night's 4-1 victory over Newcastle United in the 24th round of the Premier League, manager Arne Slot frankly admitted that the team is still looking to strengthen its squad: "We are trying to strengthen the team, not weaken it. Let's wait and see when the transfer window closes."
If an agreement is reached, Geertruida would provide much-needed cushioning for Liverpool during a crucial stage of the season, when the fixture schedule is packed and the risk of injury remains.
