Early this morning (April 1st), Poland played away against Sweden in the 2026 World Cup European play-off final. In this match, the White Eagles lost 2-3, thus missing out on the biggest football event on the planet, which will take place this summer in North America.
One of Poland's most notable players in this match was Robert Lewandowski. Before the game, Polish media suggested that this could be the 37-year-old striker's last match for the national team if they lost to Sweden.
After the match ended, Lewandowski sadly bid farewell to the Polish fans at Strawberry Arena. Regretting not being able to participate in the World Cup again, the Barcelona striker broke down in tears.
In a post-match interview after the defeat against Sweden, when asked about the possibility of retirement, Lewandowski said he did not want to make any statements at this time. However, on Instagram, Lewy shared a photo of himself accompanied by the song " Time to Say Goodbye ".
It's unclear whether Lewandowski will retire from international football, but it's almost certain he won't have another chance to participate in another World Cup. Specifically, by the time the 2030 World Cup takes place, the former Dortmund and Bayern Munich striker will be 41 years old.
It's even more difficult for Lewandowski as he's entering the twilight of his career and has shown signs of declining form. Since the start of this season, the 37-year-old striker has only scored 16 goals in 37 matches.
Similarly to the national team, Robert Lewandowski's future at Barcelona is also uncertain. Barcelona plans to offer Lewy a one-year contract extension with a 50% salary reduction and an acceptance of a reserve role in the 2026/27 season.
The Polish striker is considering the offer and will make a final decision before the end of the 2025/26 season.
