Construction
Going back in history, at 6:30 PM on May 1, 1975, Long Xuyen town was completely liberated. During that war, the Party Committee and people of Long Xuyen town endured countless hardships and sacrifices to fulfill their glorious mission, contributing alongside the rest of the nation to the great victory of the people: completing the liberation of the South, unifying the country, and advancing towards socialism.
Looking back, Long Xuyen suffered the devastating consequences of war. Infrastructure was almost completely destroyed, and the lives of its people were fraught with difficulties. However, with unwavering determination and a strong desire to rise above adversity, the Party Committee, government, and people of Long Xuyen united their efforts to embark on the task of reconstruction and development. After the complete liberation of the South, the government was established to develop production, reorganize life under the new regime; focusing on boosting socio -economic development, urban construction, accelerating urbanization, and developing rural areas.
Many new residential and urban areas have been formed, such as: the renovation and upgrading of Hai Ba Trung - Nguyen Hue Square, the construction of the monument to President Ton Duc Thang, the Rice Flower monument - a symbol of An Giang province; My Binh administrative area, Thoai Ngoc Hau - Binh Khanh residential area, Xeo Trom, Pho Que islet, My Quy, My Thoi, Bac Ha Hoang Ho, Golden City, West of Hau River… which have changed the face of a young city towards civilized and modern development.
Socio-economic development
Located in the center of An Giang province, Long Xuyen is a city with favorable conditions and potential for the development of trade and services, industry and handicrafts, and food processing. After being recognized as a Class III city by the Prime Minister (March 1, 1999), the city's economy achieved a high growth rate of 12.5% per year during the period 2000-2005. From a young city newly established in 1999, by 2005, Long Xuyen had become the unit with the highest industrial production value among districts and towns nationwide. The economic structure shifted strongly towards steady growth in all three sectors: trade and services (up 11.6%), industry and construction (up 17.1%), and agriculture (down from 8.5% to 5.9%).
During the period 2016-2020, the city's economy maintained a stable growth rate, with an average annual growth rate of 10-12%; state budget revenue reached VND 6,036 billion (achieving 107.8%). Since 2019, the city has been granted budgetary autonomy by the province. Initially, the city has achieved its assigned provincial budget targets, with all balanced revenue items exceeding the annual plan. In addition, the city has five wards/communes that are also financially autonomous: My Long, My Binh, My Phuoc, My Hoa, and Binh Khanh.
Most recently, the first quarter of 2025 witnessed positive changes in the socio-economic landscape of Long Xuyen City. The economy maintained stable development, with a promising growth trend. The trade and service sector developed quite positively, with total retail sales reaching VND 6,370 billion, equivalent to 19.4% of the annual plan and a 13.3% increase compared to the same period last year. Industrial production maintained stable growth, contributing to the overall economic development of the city.
In addition, tourist attractions and entertainment venues in the city served nearly 30,000 visitors. Revenue from food and accommodation services reached 2,460 billion VND, equivalent to 18.1% of the annual plan and a 17.5% increase compared to the same period last year. The lives of the people of Long Xuyen have also made remarkable progress. Per capita income has continuously increased, and the poverty rate has decreased significantly. The quality of education and healthcare has improved, and people have better access to services. High-rise buildings and modern residential areas are springing up everywhere, evidence of the prosperity and happiness of the people here.
