According to Motor1 , Mazda has previously confirmed it is urgently developing a new generation of the Miata. The current ND generation has been on the market for nearly 12 years, undergoing numerous technical upgrades as well as other special editions.
In 2026, Mazda will continue to make adjustments to this roadster model. The latest series of changes is simply aimed at ensuring the Miata can meet noise standards and qualify for sale in the Japanese domestic market. The latest regulations have forced engineers to "reduce noise" in the Miata, equipping it with quieter tires and a larger muffler.
With the hardtop version of the Miata, the large exhaust system creates space constraints, forcing Mazda to reduce the depth of the already rather small rear luggage compartment.
Additional modifications to the intake system help the two-door sports car meet external noise requirements during operation.
Without these changes, Mazda would not be able to sell the Miata in Japan from July onwards – the time when Stage 3 noise regulations come into effect in Japan, aligning with the international R51-03 regulation for all vehicles.
These rules lower the maximum acceptable noise level to 68-72 dB, with the specific limit depending on the vehicle's power-to-weight ratio. Previously, Stage 2 allowed noise levels of 70-74 dB, while Stage 1 permitted cars in Japan to be as noisy as 72-75 dB.

Mazda also confirmed that the Miata sold in Japan will have a special Pure Sport (PS) edition, using a 1.5L engine, which is smaller than the standard Miata. This edition combines a grey roof with a Zinc Green Metallic exterior paint, and comes with 16-inch black Rays wheels. Brembo brakes with silver calipers and Bilstein shock absorbers are standard equipment.
The Miata PS version features seats upholstered in a faux suede fabric, black trim around the start button and climate control knobs. The edges of the air vents are also finished in a glossy dark brown.
Since the first NA generation debuted in 1989, Mazda has sold over 1.26 million Miatas to customers worldwide, and the rear-wheel-drive compact convertible sports car remains the undisputed leader in its segment. However, the new noise standards serve as a reminder that all vehicles must comply with these stringent regulations, even those in niche segments.
