Lyon will continue to play in Ligue 1 in the 2025/26 season. |
On the evening of July 9th, Lyon's official website announced: "Lyon welcomes the DNCG's ruling allowing the team to continue playing in Ligue 1. We thank the Appeals Committee for recognizing the ambition and serious management commitment of the new leadership."
Two weeks ago, "Les Gones" were relegated by the French Football Confederation (DNCG) due to unresolved financial issues. This puts both Lyon's chances of qualifying for next season's Europa League and their position in Ligue 1 in jeopardy.
Thanks to the determination of the new chairman, Michele Kang, who replaced John Textor, and CEO Michael Gerlinger, Lyon had a direct meeting with the DNCG appeals committee. All the arguments and financial commitments of the new leadership convinced the review board, thereby overturning the relegation decision.
However, Lyon cannot breathe a sigh of relief completely. The DNCG still imposes strict restrictions on wage bills and transfer budgets, forcing the club to "make do with what it has" if it wants to maintain competitiveness in Ligue 1 and European competitions.
Lyon's new leadership team emphasizes that this is just the first step on the journey to restore confidence and reaffirm the position of the "Lions of the Rhone". Now, the most important goal for Lyon is to prepare for the new season. They will return to both domestic competitions and the Europa League, facing many challenges but also full of hope.
Notably, businessman Textor, who took control of Lyon in June 2022 and owned 77% of the club's shares, announced his withdrawal from all management positions. In an effort to improve Lyon's financial situation, Textor agreed to sell 43% of his shares in Crystal Palace to Woody Johnson, owner of the New York Jets football team.
This deal needs Premier League approval, a process that typically takes around two months. Textor will use the proceeds from the sale of his Crystal Palace shares to pay off his debt to Lyon.
