According to Bloomberg analyst Mark Gurman , Apple is preparing to launch a new line of MacBook Pro laptops with OLED touchscreens this fall. Notably, the device will feature Dynamic Island, previously only found on iPhones, marking a major shift in the interface design of its laptops.
Apple first introduced Dynamic Island on the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max as a pill-shaped notch that could display information and notifications. However, Dynamic Island on the MacBook Pro will be smaller than the version currently available on the phone.
The new MacBook Pro models will come in two screen sizes, 14 and 16 inches, and will have an overall look similar to the current models. Apple will update the macOS user interface to be more dynamic and work better with both touch input and mouse/trackpad control.
"For example, when a user touches a button or control, the interface will display a new menu around their finger, offering options more relevant to touch interaction," Gurman wrote.
For years, Apple resisted putting touchscreens on Macs. At an event in October 2010, just months after the iPad launch, the late CEO Steve Jobs asserted that "touch surfaces are not suitable for vertical placement" and that equipping Macs with touchscreens would be "ergonomically detrimental."
However, Apple now promotes the iPad as both a touchscreen tablet and a device that can be used with a Mac-style keyboard. In 2023, Mark Gurman reported that Apple was considering developing touchscreen Mac models, and it seems that this will soon become a reality.
According to Gurman, the new touch-enabled Mac models will launch near the end of 2026, rather than being announced at the event scheduled for March 4th. Additionally, Apple is reportedly planning to introduce a smaller Dynamic Island version on future iPhone 18 and iPhone 18 Pro Max models.
Apple is expected to hold a small hands-on experience on March 4th. While the exact product details haven't been released, most rumors suggest that the iPhone 17e, a new MacBook, a new iPad, and other hardware devices will appear or be introduced in the days surrounding the event.
