Maguire receives an additional one-match suspension. |
According to a ruling from the English Football Association (FA), Maguire has been suspended for an additional match and fined for his misconduct following his red card in the 2-2 draw against Bournemouth on March 21st. The 33-year-old defender allegedly reacted to fourth official Matt Donohue as he left the pitch.
Earlier, Maguire was sent off by referee Stuart Attwell for fouling Evanilson and preventing him from scoring. This red card meant he missed Manchester United's 1-2 defeat to Leeds United on April 14th.
The FA accused Maguire of "offensive or inappropriate conduct and language toward the fourth official after being sent off."
At the same time, MU faced another major blow when Lisandro Martinez faced the risk of a three-match suspension after receiving a red card in the match against Leeds. The Argentinian defender pulled Dominic Calvert-Lewin's hair, leading to his dismissal.
Manchester United decided to appeal the penalty, arguing that Martinez did not use excessive force and was only contesting for the ball. However, according to PGMO regulations, pulling an opponent's hair is classified as violent conduct and will result in a direct red card.
In that context, manager Michael Carrick will most likely be forced to use a young central defensive pairing when visiting Stamford Bridge with Leny Yoro (20 years old) and Ayden Heaven (19 years old), as Matthijs de Ligt is still recovering from injury.
The match against Chelsea is crucial in the race for the top 5. A win could bring MU closer to a Champions League spot, while a defeat would narrow the gap between the two teams to just 4 points.
Highlights MU 1-2 Leeds United: In the early hours of April 14th, Manchester United suffered a 1-2 defeat against Leeds United in the 32nd round of the Premier League.
