The small room located in the inner building of the No. 1 Social Work and Social Protection Center in Lao Cai province is where Ms. Nguyen Thi Dang has lived for over six years. Paralyzed on one side of her body, she relies on others for all personal activities, and her life used to be a long series of dependent and humiliating days. But since being admitted to the Center, her life has taken a different turn.
“Before, I thought I wouldn’t live much longer because I was both sick and had no one to take care of me. But since coming here, I’ve been cared for by the staff like family. I have enough to eat and drink, and someone helps me with even the smallest things. I feel very lucky,” Mrs. Dang shared emotionally.
Beyond material care, what she appreciated most was the warmth of emotional support. The daily inquiries, the shared meals, and the caring glances from the staff helped her overcome her feelings of inferiority and gradually rediscover joy in life.

Currently, the center is caring for and nurturing 40 elderly people who are eligible for social welfare support. Each person has a different situation: no longer having relatives, illness, hardship, deprivation... But when they come here, they all share one common destination: a home. Gone is the silence and loneliness; instead, there are laughter and simple life stories filled with human warmth.

Ms. Truong Thi Binh, a resident at the center, shared: “Here, we don’t feel abandoned. Everyone lives together like brothers and sisters, friends; the staff are very dedicated. When we are sick, we receive timely care. At our age, having such conditions is very precious.”
These heartfelt stories partly reflect the profound humanistic values that the No. 1 Social Work and Social Protection Center of Lao Cai province brings. This place is not just a place to live, but also a spiritual anchor – a place that heals even emotional wounds.
Beyond ensuring basic living conditions and daily necessities, the Center places special emphasis on healthcare and rehabilitation for the elderly. Given that many residents suffer from chronic illnesses or reduced mobility, the rehabilitation exercises are designed to be appropriate, gentle, and effective.
At the Rehabilitation Center, regular daily exercise sessions are held under the guidance of professional staff. These simple movements are highly effective, helping the elderly maintain mobility, reduce pain, and minimize complications.

Mr. Do Duy Khanh, an officer from the Rehabilitation Health Department, shared: “Most of the elderly here have weak health and many underlying diseases, so exercise must be done very carefully. We always closely monitor each case and develop appropriate exercises. More importantly, we try to create a comfortable atmosphere so that the elderly feel that exercising is not an obligation but a joy.”
The perseverance and dedication of the staff here have helped many elderly people significantly improve their health. However, beyond the statistics or professional results, what is most valuable is the trust and sense of security they bring to the elderly.
Mr. Bui Van Yen, Deputy Director of the Center, said: “We recognize that the elderly here are not just beneficiaries of social welfare, but also family members who need to be cared for with all our hearts. In addition to ensuring proper policies and benefits, the Center always focuses on improving the quality of services and creating a friendly and welcoming living environment so that the elderly feel truly loved.”
"A Home in the Late Afternoon" is not just a name, but also a very real feeling of those living here. A home without blood ties, yet bound together by sharing and human kindness.

Amidst the hustle and bustle of life, the No. 1 Social Work and Social Protection Center of Lao Cai province quietly shelters vulnerable individuals, persistently spreading love and kindness. For those who have lived almost their entire lives, all they need is a place of refuge and warm care. Then, as the sun sets, there are no more long, lonely moments. In that warm space, they peacefully live out their old age slowly, calmly, and fully, surrounded by human kindness.
