- In early April, when the golden sunlight gently spreads across the hills of Lang Son, it is also the time when the plum orchards begin their harvest season.
Small plums are a signature agricultural product of the province. With their sweet and sour taste, crisp texture, and fragrant aroma, besides being eaten fresh, small plums can be processed into many products such as pickled plums, candied plums, and jams. Therefore, small plums are loved and sought after by many people. To meet market demand, in recent years, plum growers in the province have focused on expanding their cultivation area and applying scientific and technical methods to production to improve productivity and product quality.

Visiting Cao Loc commune, one of the communes with a large area of plum cultivation in the province, we easily encountered people busily harvesting plums. Mr. Hua Duc Xuan, from Ban Don village, said: "Last year, due to the leap month of June, the harvest season changed, and this year's plum harvest started earlier than usual. Unlike last year, when buyers only came at the end of the season, this year, traders have been coming directly to the orchards to buy plums at stable prices since the beginning of the season. Currently, my family has about 600 plum trees planted in 2016, yielding an average of about 7 tons of fruit each year. Since the beginning of the season, my family has harvested and sold over 300 kg of plums to traders, bringing in an income of about 3 million VND. The plum season is usually short, so my family is focusing manpower on harvesting to ensure quality and facilitate sales."
Similar to Mr. Xuan's family, Mrs. Nong Thi Thang's family in Ban Lanh village, Cong Son commune, is also busy harvesting plums. Mrs. Thang said: Her family started planting plums in 2016 with about 300 trees. In recent years, the family has always focused on caring for, pruning, and fertilizing at the right time, so the trees grow and develop well, producing consistent and high-quality fruit. This year's plum harvest is estimated at about 4 tons. Currently, the price of plums purchased by traders at the orchard ranges from 8,000 to 15,000 VND/kg (depending on the size of the fruit); retail prices range from 20,000 to 25,000 VND/kg, an increase of about 2,000 to 3,000 VND/kg compared to the 2025 plum harvest. Since the beginning of the season, traders have come directly to the orchard to buy the plums, so sales have been quite smooth. I hope that from now until the end of the season, the price of plums will continue to remain stable as it is now so that farmers can produce with peace of mind.
Mr. Luong Van Mao, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Cong Son commune, said: Currently, the entire commune has about 100 hectares of plum trees, mainly concentrated in villages such as Ban Lanh, Na Ten, Ban Luan…; the annual harvest yields 200 to 250 tons of fruit. In recent years, plums have become one of the main crops, contributing to increasing people's income. To improve production efficiency, the commune government has coordinated with specialized agencies to disseminate information and guide people in applying scientific and technical methods to care for and control pests and diseases, while encouraging the expansion of planting area in a concentrated and sustainable manner. To ensure stable output of plums, in the coming time, the commune government will continue to promote consumption connections and actively coordinate with relevant agencies to research and develop further processing of plums.

Not only the people in Cao Loc and Cong Son communes, but all plum growers in the province are busy harvesting at this time. According to statistics, the entire province currently has over 730 hectares of plum orchards, with an average yield of over 2,600 tons per year. From growing small plums, many households in the province have achieved a stable income of 15 to 30 million VND per harvest.
It is known that in recent years, to improve the productivity, quality, and value of plums, functional agencies and the People's Committees of plum-growing communes have actively coordinated and implemented many solutions. Notable among these are the Department of Science and Technology's registration of the collective trademark " Lang Son Plum"; the implementation of the project "Research and Conservation of Plum Genetic Resources in Lang Son" within the framework of the provincial-level genetic resource conservation project for the period 2021-2025; and the encouragement of households and cooperatives to research and process plums into jams, candied plums, etc.
With stable yields and higher prices compared to last year, this year's plum harvest has initially shown many positive signs, bringing more enthusiasm to plum growers. This also motivates them to continue investing in care, expanding the planted area, and improving product quality.
