At the Danilo Martelli Stadium, Cole entered his first match as head coach with high expectations. However, things quickly spiraled out of control. In the 6th minute, Cesena conceded an own goal from Zaro, putting them in a disadvantageous chasing position.
The situation became even more difficult in the second half when Cesena received three consecutive yellow cards. In the 58th minute, Mantova doubled the lead thanks to a goal from Meroni, leaving the visitors with virtually no chance of turning the game around.
Faced with a deadlock, Cole made a series of tactical adjustments. He made five substitutions in an attempt to find a breakthrough. However, none of them yielded any significant results, as Cesena played disjointedly and lacked ideas in attack.
In the third minute of added time, Mancuso sealed a 3-0 victory for Mantova, bringing to a close a forgettable evening for Cole and his players. The defeat leaves Cesena stuck in eighth place with 40 points, still within the play-off zone for promotion but under significant pressure from their chasing rivals.
Cole has never been a head coach but has experience as an assistant to former teammate Frank Lampard at Chelsea and Everton. Additionally, Cole also served on the England coaching staff during Lee Carsley's interim period as manager.
During his playing career, Cole made 107 appearances for England, and is considered one of the best left-backs in English history.
