Huu Thang's brilliant performance

Scoring a brace in The Cong Viettel's 6-0 victory over Da Nang FC, Nguyen Huu Thang continued to showcase his impressive form.

Viettel FC became the team with the most goals scored in a single V-League match this season when they thrashed Da Nang FC on May 2nd with a score reminiscent of a tennis match. The military team also solidified their third place position in the standings, just one point behind the two leading teams.

In a team with many excellent attacking midfielders, Huu Thang is not often a starter due to his physical disadvantage (1.68 m tall). However, he always knows how to shine whenever the coach gives him the opportunity. In 15 matches since the beginning of the season (4 starts), Huu Thang has scored 5 goals, matching the achievements of many well-known strikers such as Nguyen Hai Long, Nguyen Van Quyet (Hanoi FC), Hoang Vu Samson ( Quang Nam FC)...

In the 21st round of the V-League, Huu Thang made his first start for Viettel under coach Velizar Popov and it was he who opened the scoring spree at Hang Day Stadium in the 12th minute. It was also this midfielder who received the ball from Khuat Van Khang in the 20th minute and unleashed a volley from nearly 20 meters, giving his team a 3-0 lead.

Huu Thang once made a strong impression with a goal scored from more than half the field. In the match on April 6th, when The Cong Viettel was trailing Quang Nam FC, Huu Thang saw the opposing team's goalkeeper had advanced, so he decided to take a bold shot, securing a draw for his team.

Before joining the V-League, Huu Thang regularly featured in the Vietnamese youth national teams at various levels, from U16 to U22, and consistently won individual awards. Showing maturity compared to his peers, Huu Thang played an important role in the U21 Viettel team before being promoted to the first team from the 2021 season.

Having coached Huu Thang at Viettel's youth team, Coach Thach Bao Khanh highly praised his pupil's ball-handling skills, tactical thinking, and sharp vision for playmaking. Coach Popov, even when he was coaching Thanh Hoa FC, believed that The Cong Viettel possessed a "treasure" that hadn't been fully exploited. In 2023, he contacted Huu Thang and hoped to bring him to Thanh Hoa, but without success until their reunion today.

If he continues to maintain his high level of performance, Huu Thang will certainly attract the attention of coach Kim Sang-sik when he calls up the Vietnamese national team for the FIFA Days matches in June 2025. The 24-year-old talent also revealed his goal is to join the national team to compete in international tournaments.
