Man United shouldn't get their hopes up too high.

A tired old story that Manchester United has been repeating for over a decade is "changing managers changes fortunes." And that good fortune usually only lasts a few games.

Manchester United have been in decline since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013. But in the first few seasons, Man United still maintained a certain degree of the demeanor of a great team. They waited until almost the end of the 2013-2014 season to sack manager David Moyes. And then gave Louis Van Gaal a full two years to prove his effectiveness.

Even manager Jose Mourinho – famous for being sacked before the end of his contract – was given more than two years to work and was only sacked in the middle of his third season (2018-2019).

That was also when Man United started a peculiar trend in football: "changing managers changes fortunes." Ole Solskjaer took over as manager from Mourinho that year and immediately showed remarkable effectiveness with a 12-match unbeaten run in the domestic league (winning 10 of them).

Solskjaer's "luck" lasted for over two years. He wasn't particularly outstanding, but he was fortunate because the Red Devils' management lowered the team's standards after five years of decline in the "post-Sir Alex" era. By the 2020-2021 season, Man United could no longer tolerate Ole's inconsistent work style and limited abilities. So they sacked him in the same way they sacked Mourinho.

Michael Carrick, Ralf Rangnick, then Erik Ten Hag, Van Nistelrooy, and Ruben Amorim were all part of that "deceptive" trend at Old Trafford. They consistently helped the Red Devils improve for a short period after taking over as manager, only to fail to achieve the team's long-term goals. Carrick still retains some credibility, as he was only given a mere two weeks as interim manager mid-season in 2021-2022.

Surprisingly, after four years, a similar opportunity has presented itself to Carrick. And he's doing just as well as he did four years ago. Two consecutive wins against Man City and Arsenal have propelled Man United back into the top four. This promises to secure Carrick a long-term contract instead of just an interim role.

But Manchester United fans, as well as neutral supporters, are now sober. It's a recurring story. And there's no guarantee that the "Red Devils" have truly revived after just a few good games.
