As early as 1995, the green bamboo variety was introduced for experimental planting in Ngoc Chau commune. However, after the project ended in 2004, this bamboo variety was almost forgotten. Only a few households, including Duong Thi Luyen’s family, maintained the precious plant.
In 2018, Ms. Luyen established the Ngoc Chau Bamboo Shoots Cooperative with eight members and more than 20 hectares of planting area. To date, the cooperative has grown to more than 50 members with an income of 9-15 million VND/person/month, a planting area of over 50 hectares and a consumption link of more than 120 hectares with households in the area. The annual bamboo shoot output reaches more than 1,000 tons, bringing in tens of billions of VND in revenue.
Mr. Phung Thanh Xuan, a farmer in Tan Trung village, said: “Since growing bamboo shoots, my family has earned hundreds of millions of dong each year. Bamboo shoot growing techniques are simple and do not require strict care, which is an advantage for many people to start a business.”
Bamboo shoots are produced according to organic standards, ensuring food safety, with an elongated shape, white core, rich in antioxidants, fiber, vitamins and minerals. Bamboo shoots are crunchy, slightly sweet, non-toxic, suitable for processing into many dishes such as salad, boiled, stir-fried, pickled with chili or dried.
With high productivity and outstanding economic value, bamboo shoots have become a specialty in Ngoc Chau commune and neighboring communes of Tan Yen district. According to statistics, each hectare of bamboo can yield 50-60 tons of bamboo shoots per year, with fresh bamboo shoots selling for between 60,000-120,000 VND/kg depending on the type. After deducting costs, people can earn a profit of 500-600 million VND/ha/year, higher than traditional crops such as rice or corn.
Local authorities pay great attention to branding bamboo shoots, considering it the key to increasing product value and expanding the market. In 2021, fresh bamboo shoots of Ngoc Chau Forestry Bamboo Shoots Cooperative achieved 4-star OCOP certification at the provincial level, which is an important step in affirming quality.
By 2022, the product will be recognized as a "National Organic Agricultural Product", creating a solid foundation to compete in domestic and foreign markets.
In the coming time, green bamboo shoots are oriented to develop according to three pillars: Expanding the market, diversifying products and improving quality; aiming to achieve 5-star OCOP certification; investing in modern processing lines and exporting to countries such as Japan and Korea; at the same time, developing tourism to experience the bamboo shoot harvest season to create more income and promote the brand. The local government also committed to support, from expanding the planting area to applying technology in production.
