Modular PC manufacturer Framework is adjusting its DDR5 RAM pricing again due to continuing memory cost increases. In an announcement last week, Framework said it will charge $10 per GB for the 8 GB, 16 GB, and 32 GB versions, with a "slightly higher" price for versions of 48 GB and above.
In early December, Framework announced a price increase for its memory modules, citing "significantly increased costs" from suppliers and distributors. With this latest price hike, the 8GB version increased from $60 to $80 , the 16GB option from $120 to $160 , and the 32GB version from $240 to $320 .
Meanwhile, the price of the 48GB version more than doubled, from $240 in June to $620 . The 64GB (2 x 32GB) and 96GB (2 x 48GB) modules also increased in price, costing $640 and $1,240 respectively.
The increase in RAM prices may lead to a corresponding increase in the price of memory options included with the DIY version of Framework laptops.
To help alleviate price pressure, Framework allows users to order devices without memory; they can reuse existing RAM or find cheaper options from PCPartPicker, a third-party partner sold directly on Framework's website.
This announcement is not the final RAM price increase. "We continue to absorb some of the increased costs when introducing the new prices, but may need to adjust prices again next month," Framework stated.
According to market research firm IDC , the global memory shortage will "last until 2027" as giant DRAM manufacturers like Micron, Samsung, and SK Hynix shift resources to the promising artificial intelligence (AI) industry.
