Iniesta nearly became Morocco's Director of Football. |
According to Marca , the former Barcelona midfielder has been in negotiations with the Moroccan Football Federation for weeks regarding the position of Director of Football. This is considered a strategic role in the long-term development plan of the national team. The process was so meticulous that everyone believed in a mutually beneficial outcome.
The first contact took place a few days before the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations final. Iniesta was invited to meet with representatives of the Federation to discuss the possibility of joining the Moroccan football governing body.
Following that meeting, the two sides continued with several rounds of discussions, including face-to-face meetings, to clearly define the role and responsibilities of the former Spanish international. The project was reportedly quite attractive to Iniesta. Morocco currently possesses a generation of highly promising players and wants to build a more modern football management system.
According to the initial proposal, Iniesta could be involved in the selection process for the national team's head coach. In addition, he would have a crucial role in scouting, particularly in finding and connecting with Moroccan players currently playing in Europe.
However, just as the negotiations seemed to be getting very close to a final agreement, some issues remained unresolved.

According to plan, Morocco will announce the signing of Iniesta and the new head coach Mohamed Ouahbi. |
Marca reported that differences in financial terms prevented the two sides from reaching an agreement. The final deal therefore collapsed just days before its scheduled announcement.
The incident also caused confusion in the media, as the Moroccan Football Federation had prepared a press release to send to several news outlets. The announcement was intended to be made during the farewell event for coach Walid Regragui and the introduction of the new head coach, Mohamed Ouahbi.
However, after negotiations broke down, the press release had to be edited and Iniesta's appointment was no longer mentioned. The deal thus closed before it could become the first major turning point in the former Barcelona midfielder's managerial career.
