Phil Neville failed at Portland Timbers. |
The decision to terminate the contract was announced by the American team on May 26th, ending the former Manchester United star's less than two-year stint at Providence Park. Portland Timbers are now urgently searching for a new coach to improve their situation after a prolonged period of decline.
Neville left the manager's job after only leading Portland to 4 wins in their last 14 MLS games. This poor performance saw the team drop to the bottom of the Western Conference and fail to meet the expectations of both the management and the fans.
Portland Timbers owner Merritt Paulson still had high praise for the former Manchester United defender despite the disappointing results. He described Neville as a leader who always maintained a positive attitude and was dedicated to the club and the community in Portland.
Neville was appointed in November 2023 ahead of the 2024 MLS season. In a total of 82 games managing Portland Timbers, he secured 27 wins. However, inconsistent performance led the team to decide on a change in management.
Before managing Portland Timbers, Neville served as interim manager at Salford, and also coached the England women's national team and Inter Miami.
Neville's failure at Portland Timbers further demonstrates that Sir Alex Ferguson's famous protégés have yet to achieve success as managers. Prior to him, Gary Neville, Roy Keane, Wayne Rooney, and Ryan Giggs all had unsuccessful managerial careers.
