Sewing, dyeing... what does it say?

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên12/01/2025

Originating from the idea of “queer house, sewing room” and the ways of dealing with specific materials and techniques such as dyeing, sewing, etc., this exhibition explores the way women and mothers “sewing and knitting” to cherish and take care of family life.

Viewers interact in the "Notice" room (chat room with clothes)

Not stopping there, this project also contributes to tracing the traces of the community economy of the past, such as silk spinning and weaving factories, garment and embroidery cooperatives for export...

In addition, participants also have the opportunity to reflect on special handicrafts, aiming to spread a slow lifestyle in a fast, busy, and chaotic life.

Rice and thread strings by Le Tu Anh

On display here are hand-dyed works (Pham Ngoc Lan), hand-embroidered works (Nguyen Quoc Thanh) with the sound of handicraft labor, thereby "reviving" the tones of sun and wind, the dance of fingers...

Experimenting with other manipulations on objects (Nguyen Bang Giang, Linh Linh) and costumes bearing the marks of the past also invite viewers to come closer, touch, fold, exchange images, and catch the rhythm.

Cardboard (Do Thanh Tam), rice - thread (Le Tu Anh), dissolving paper (Vu Thanh Binh), pantyhose (Nguyen Bao Chau), rice (Dao Anh Khoi), fabric (Nguyen Quoc Thanh), velcro (Nguyen Hong Nhung)... also seem to want to talk to the viewer.

From there, accessories and garments seem to incorporate more experiences, gender complex, bodies, female and queer spirit (those who are not heterosexual or individuals who are perceived as masculine women or feminine men).

Performance of the woodwind by artist Pham Ngoc Lan

This is a project organized by Queer Forever!, in collaboration with Bà Bầu Air and Nhà Sàn Collective within the framework of the “Queer Ideas” program initiated and sponsored by the Goethe Institute Hanoi . The program is curated by Nguyễn Quốc Thành.

Sharing about the project, curator and artist Nguyen Quoc Thanh said: "The project started with the idea of the artists wanting to make a 'queer house' with many rooms. The idea of home actually exists a lot in Vietnam, so we decided to open the workshop as a sewing room. When the body interacts with clothes, I feel that clothes are like 'patterns' and the body reacts to that in different ways, from different perspectives. So the 'queer house' project also reflects the desire to move, not to be fixed".

Nguyen Quoc Thanh is a co-founder of Nha San Collective in Hanoi.

In 2013, he started Queer Forever!, a project that continues in the form of community participation such as mobile cinema, residential space, kitchen, meeting place, learning space, art making...

In 2019, Thanh produced the film Vuon Lai Xu Da Ky with content showing, discussing and compiling publications about Vietnamese queer cinema.

In 2022, Thanh collaborated to open a queer house called ưhuh22 within the framework of the Ben project of Nha San Collective at documenta15, Kassel, Germany.

The idea of a queer house welcoming everyone will then continue to be implemented in the years 2023 - 2025 in Hanoi with the support of the Goethe-Institut Hanoi within the framework of the Queer Ideas program.
