Scott McTominay created one of the most spectacular moments in Scottish football history when he executed a bicycle kick from a height of 2.53 meters in Scotland's 4-2 victory over Denmark in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers on November 19th.
His bicycle kick helped Scotland qualify for the World Cup after a 28-year wait, and led to direct comparisons with the legendary goals of Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale.
According to statistics circulating after the match, McTominay's touch point in the shot reached 2.53 m (8.3 ft), higher than Ronaldo's classic overhead kick against Juventus in the Champions League in 2018 (2.38 m - 7.7 ft).
Notably, Bale's touch in the 2018 Champions League final was at a height of 2.37 meters, while Wayne Rooney's volley against Man City in 2011 was recorded at a height of 1.52 meters.
McTominay's goal came just three minutes into kick-off, setting the stage for a thrilling chase at Hampden Park. Despite Denmark having a man sent off in the second half, Scotland were twice pegged back before securing a 4-2 victory and a place in the 2026 World Cup.
Coach Steve Clarke called it "the most beautiful overhead kick I've ever seen," while many commentators compared McTominay to Michael Jordan for his incredible jump. One social media analyst used the ball's diameter of 22 cm to estimate the height of the impact point, claiming the Napoli midfielder surpassed Ronaldo's height.
After six matches in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, McTominay scored two goals and provided one assist for Scotland. He also has four goals and one assist in 14 appearances for Napoli in all competitions this season.
