Messi lets Barcelona decide his own future.

Lionel Messi has chosen to stay out of the power struggle at Barcelona because, for him right now, the World Cup and the final stage of his career are more important than any vote.

Lionel Messi has chosen to stay out of the power struggle at Barcelona.

Barcelona is entering a pivotal presidential election, but the name with the greatest weight in the hearts of the fans is absent from any campaign. Lionel Messi, the greatest icon of the modern era at Camp Nou, has chosen silence, even though a single gesture or word from him could make a difference.

Messi's unexpected appearance at Camp Nou during the stadium's renovations immediately fueled speculation. Many believed it could signal a new political role for Messi in the Barcelona presidential election, scheduled for March 15th. However, the reality proved to be quite the opposite.

Messi has no intention of getting involved. He chooses to stay out of it, not supporting any candidate, including Joan Laporta, who was closely associated with him during his first term.

This decision wasn't a sign of coldness, but rather a shrewd one. Messi understood that, at Barcelona right now, power and emotion are intertwined, and any appearance of his could be exploited for political purposes.

Messi's priorities right now lie elsewhere.

Messi's priorities right now lie elsewhere. He's playing in the MLS for Inter Miami, and more importantly, he's preparing for the 2026 World Cup, which could be his last.

Argentina are the reigning champions, and Messi understands his responsibility as a leader. He doesn't want the turmoil at Barcelona to distract him from the biggest remaining goal of his playing career.

Messi's distancing himself from the election also reflects another reality: the relationship between him and Laporta was never truly mended after the summer of 2021. Unfulfilled promises, failed attempts at reconciliation—all of this led Messi to choose silence over confrontation. He didn't want to become part of the old controversy, much less be placed in the position of a "king of politics."

However, being on the sidelines doesn't mean turning his back. Messi has repeatedly stated his desire to return to Barcelona in the future. The only question is the timing and the role. This could be after the World Cup, when he's no longer caught up in the demanding schedule, and when Barcelona's power structure is more stable.

Messi will return to Barca, but in his own way. Not through votes, not through campaign slogans, but through a position that transcends politics. And perhaps that is the only way for the relationship between Messi and Barcelona to be closed, or to open, a new, less tumultuous, but more sustainable chapter.
