Lionel Messi played a major role in Giovani Lo Celso's move closer to joining Inter Miami in the January 2026 transfer window.

According to AS , Lo Celso rejected an offer from his former club in his hometown, Rosario Central, to join Inter Miami. Messi is said to have persuaded the midfielder to join the MLS club. Lo Celso's goal is to secure a place in the Argentina national team under coach Lionel Scaloni.

Playing alongside Messi at Inter Miami could increase Lo Celso's chances of participating in the 2026 World Cup. Lo Celso currently has a contract with Real Betis until June 2028. He will return to Betis from Tottenham Hotspur in 2024 for €5 million.

In the 2025/26 season, his performance was inconsistent due to muscle injuries, resulting in fewer minutes played under coach Manuel Pellegrini. Therefore, the La Liga team agreed to sell Lo Celso for approximately 5 million euros.

If the deal goes through, Lo Celso will reunite with Messi and Rodrigo De Paul at Inter Miami, becoming the eighth Argentinian player in the MLS champions' squad (along with Messi, De Paul, Tadeo Allende, Mateo Silvetti, Gonzalo Luján, Tomás Avilés, and Óscar Ustari). At 29, Lo Celso is still young and at a high level compared to the average MLS player.
