According to FIFA's post-match report, Lionel Messi only covered a distance of about 3.4 meters while running at a speed of over 25 km/h in the match against Jordan. The rest of the game for the Argentine number 10 was at a slower speed. In other words, the World Cup record holder practically "walked" throughout the match.
In addition, Messi also has the fewest sprints on the field across various distances, such as 7-15 km/h, 15-20 km/h, and 25 km/h.
For comparison, José Manuel López – who came on in the 82nd minute to replace Julián Alvarez – only covered a distance of nearly 1,500 meters, but 18.5 meters of that distance were covered at a speed of over 25 km/h.
In fact, this isn't the first time Messi has had the lowest movement intensity on the pitch. In the 3-0 opening match victory against Algeria, Messi, despite scoring a hat-trick, only moved 6.81 km in 80 minutes on the field.
This figure is equivalent to approximately 7.33 km in a full match and also makes him one of the players who moved the least in the entire team.
Instead of constantly searching for the ball, at 39, Messi no longer dominates the game with relentless engagement. Instead, he increasingly shapes the game through carefully chosen moments.

"El Pulga" often positioned himself on the edge of the pitch before appearing in dangerous positions when Argentina attacked. His hat-trick was the result of perfect judgment and positioning, as well as outstanding execution.
To maximize Messi's effectiveness, coach Lionel Scaloni's system is also specifically designed. Much of the work that the 39-year-old superstar used to do, such as dribbling, moving the ball from midfield to the attacking zone, and breaking through the defense, is now handled by Rodrigo De Paul, Lautaro Martínez, and Julián Álvarez.
Their relentless movement, deceptive runs, and off-ball movement create spaces for Messi to operate in.
While Messi's estimated distance of movement throughout the match is 7.33 km, his teammates playing around him cover a combined total of approximately 35 km, ensuring that the Argentinian captain maintains his fitness and creativity throughout his time on the pitch.
