On March 30, the American technology company Meta announced that it is testing a new paid service package on the Instagram platform, allowing users to access additional advanced features.
According to Meta, users who subscribe to this plan can view Story posts—which automatically disappear after 24 hours—without their names appearing in the viewer list.
Additionally, they also have more control over who is allowed to access the photos and videos they share.
The service is currently being piloted in several countries, although Meta has not yet released details. According to TechCrunch, the test markets include Japan, Mexico, and the Philippines, with a fee of approximately $2 per month.
This move comes as Meta is actively diversifying its revenue streams. Last year, the company launched paid, ad-free versions of Facebook and Instagram in the UK to meet local legal requirements.
Currently, many social media platforms like Snapchat and X also offer paid subscription packages for several years. Snap reports that its Snapchat platform has over 25 million paid subscribers and is aiming for approximately $1 billion in revenue annually from this segment.
In addition, Instagram has also allowed content creators to charge followers for access to exclusive content, contributing to the expansion of the creative economy ecosystem on the platform.
