Advancing through the group stage was within Mexico's expectations. But exceeding financial expectations was something no one anticipated. An economic boom is spreading across Mexico, fueled by the football team's success. Many tourist destinations are overwhelmed, and revenue has surpassed $3 billion.
Despite the protests, even riots, that erupted in Mexico City from the start of the tournament, and numerous social issues that arose, Mexico can now be said to have won commercially, even though the tournament has only just passed the group stage. From the moment they bid to host the World Cup , not many Mexicans supported the plan. There was widespread opposition, but now that the World Cup is over, many will likely be happy to see the positive economic outlook for the host cities.

According to estimates by the National Federation of Chambers of Commerce, Services and Tourism (Concanaco), the 2026 World Cup generated over 17.5 billion pesos in revenue in its first two weeks, equivalent to approximately $1 billion USD. Bars, restaurants, hotels, and sporting goods stores are experiencing record sales thanks to the influx of fans and tourists. This boom is particularly evident in the host cities, but it's worth noting that the surge in revenue is spreading to other tourist destinations across the country such as Zacatecas, Oaxaca, Hidalgo, Puebla, and others.
Throughout the 2026 World Cup, restaurants and tourist areas remained bustling with visitors at all hours. To meet the increasing demand, many businesses hired extra staff and extended their opening hours. Economic growth predictions made before the tournament are proving true week by week. According to Concanaco's estimates, the World Cup could generate approximately 65 billion pesos, equivalent to over 3.7 billion USD.

Monterrey is an interesting case. There are no Mexican national team matches here. For this reason, the city decided to focus on promoting the other participating national teams, turning each match into a major event. The Japanese, South Korean, Swedish, and Dutch teams received enthusiastic support from Monterrey fans. They filled the stadiums and city squares. The local authorities especially promoted the match between Japan and Tunisia, a game that went down in history as the 1,000th match in World Cup history.
The Monterrey metropolitan area also has many South Korean companies, so this strategy proved successful. In the first week of the tournament, Monterrey recorded an 85% hotel occupancy rate. Local chambers of commerce estimate that the tournament could generate up to 2 billion pesos in direct economic benefits for the state of Nuevo Leon. Hotels, restaurants, bars, and businesses reported record revenues, driven by the influx of foreign tourists. Thus, besides the US, Mexico is also thriving with revenue from this World Cup.
