Microsoft, the world's largest software maker, has been hit by a series of serious security incidents recently, prompting CEO Satya Nadella to say the company needs a "culture change" in an interview with Wired .

In July, Microsoft was at the center of a global IT disruption caused by a faulty update by security firm CrowdStrike.

In March, a report from the US Department of Homeland Security assessed Microsoft's security systems as deficient and called for an "overhaul".

The company is particularly vulnerable to attacks from the Storm-0588 hacker group, the ministry noted.

Earlier this year, the Windows maker revealed its systems had been breached by the Midnight Blizzard hacking group, accessing a “very small percentage” of business email accounts.

This is the group that attacked the information technology company SolarWinds in 2020, one of Microsoft's major partners.

Since taking over as CEO of Microsoft in 2014, Nadella has become known for his altruistic leadership style and emphasized that change does not come from blaming employees.

He also argues that misaligned rewards often lead companies to prioritize product development over protecting existing products.

This mindset appears to have played a role in the SolarWinds attack, where a ProPublica report found that the company deliberately hid a security flaw in its service to avoid losing government investment. The flaw was exploited by hackers.
