Hanoi's sky was cloudy this morning after a series of hot days. Around 10-11 am, thunderstorms occurred in many areas such as Thanh Xuan, Ha Dong, Cau Giay, Hoang Mai, Tu Liem, and Phu Dien, causing a noticeable drop in temperature.

The previous day, scorching heat blanketed northern and central Vietnam. The National Center for Meteorological and Hydrological Forecasting recorded temperatures of 38 degrees Celsius in many areas, including Kim Boi (Phu Tho), Nho Quan (Ninh Binh), Ha Tinh, Ba To (Quang Ngai), Tam Ky ( Da Nang ), Quang Ngai, and Ba Don (Quang Tri). Hanoi recorded 37.7 degrees Celsius at the Lang station and 37.3 degrees Celsius at the Ha Dong station.
The reason for the showers in the North is the influence of a maritime air mass combined with a humid southeasterly wind encroaching from the east, causing a reduction in the heat. From tomorrow, May 17th, the area will enter a period of widespread showers and thunderstorms.
The meteorological agency reported that rain was concentrated in the eastern part of Northern Vietnam. On May 18-19, the rain area expanded westward. Around May 20-21, due to the influence of a humid southeasterly wind combined with southwesterly wind convergence from the edge of the subtropical high-pressure system, Northern Vietnam may experience moderate to heavy rainfall in some areas.
From May 22nd onwards, as the convergence of winds and the weakening of the southeasterly wind zone occur, rainfall in the North will decrease and eventually cease.
The US Accuweather website forecasts that Hanoi's temperature tomorrow will drop to 26-31 degrees Celsius. High-altitude areas above 1,500 meters, such as Sa Pa ( Lao Cai ), will generally experience temperatures of 18-24 degrees Celsius.
In Central Vietnam, the hot low-pressure system from the west is also tending to weaken, so the heatwave is gradually subsiding. Tomorrow, the heatwave will only be localized and will end on May 18th.
In Southern Vietnam and the southern part of the Central Highlands, the southwest monsoon has gradually intensified, causing thunderstorms in the late afternoon and evening. The highest temperatures in Southern Vietnam are generally 33-35 degrees Celsius, while in the Central Highlands they range from 31-33 degrees Celsius.
