Accordingly, due to the influence of a strong cold air mass combined with a jet stream in the upper westerly wind zone, on the morning of January 22nd, the North experienced cloudy skies with rain and light rain, and temperatures dropped sharply. In the mountainous and midland areas of the North, temperatures fell to 5-7 degrees Celsius, with Mau Son (Lang Son) recording a minimum temperature of 0.2 degrees Celsius; in the Northern delta region, temperatures dropped to 9-11 degrees Celsius. In Hanoi , temperatures this morning were generally below 11 degrees Celsius, with Ba Vi at 10.4 degrees Celsius, Son Tay at 10.2 degrees Celsius, Lang at 10.9 degrees Celsius, Hoai Duc at 10.5 degrees Celsius, and Ha Dong at 10.8 degrees Celsius.

"Compared to the morning of January 21st, when the cold front first arrived, temperatures in the North have dropped by 6-8 degrees Celsius, and in Hanoi by 9-10 degrees Celsius," Director Mai Van Khiem emphasized.

Explaining why this period is the coldest since the beginning of the 2025-2026 winter season, Mr. Mai Van Khiem stated that the first widespread severe cold spell of the 2025-2026 winter season occurred on January 6-8, and this is the second widespread severe cold spell. The severe cold spell on January 6-8 was a dry cold spell with few clouds, so nighttime temperatures dropped low, while sunny days allowed temperatures to rise. This cold spell, however, is a humid cold spell, with low nighttime temperatures and low daytime temperatures. Today, the entire Northern region experienced widespread severe cold and frost. This is also the first day of widespread severe cold and frost of the 2025-2026 winter season.

Forecasts indicate that from now until January 23rd, the North will continue to experience intense cold, with mountainous and hilly areas experiencing severe cold, with nighttime and morning temperatures ranging from 5-7 degrees Celsius. The Northern Delta region will have temperatures from 10-12 degrees Celsius, with the highest temperature on January 23rd ranging from 15-18 degrees Celsius. From January 24th, the cold air mass will gradually weaken, and the weather in the North will gradually warm up. This warming trend is expected to continue until the end of January 2026.
