Endless transition between seasons

Việt NamViệt Nam31/07/2024

We are living through the transition from summer to autumn, time seems to slow down in a leisurely dance of the changing seasons. People often compare the changing seasons to a teenage girl with a capricious temperament. Sometimes the sun shines brightly, other times it demands a mournful, drizzling rain.

Somewhere, the flame trees are hastily igniting a fiery red, as if wanting to set the sky ablaze; the crape myrtle trees scatter their blossoms all over the path leading to someone's house like a soft red carpet underfoot. The weather brings storms and winds, coming and going suddenly, leaving behind a lingering, empty feeling. For generations, the changing of seasons has always brought people a feeling of ethereal joy, a touch of regret, a hint of longing in pensive contemplation...

During the transitional season, the sun is less intense and scorching than in the peak of summer, but it remains quite powerful, still a harsh test for people and all living things before autumn arrives. Walking on the sweltering roads at midday, the work clothes are soaked with sweat from the sun that feels like it's burning the skin. Suddenly, we long for a rain shower or a gust of wind to come and seep through the windows to cool the space and lighten our hearts.

Life is already full of worries, and the changing seasons add to the burden of storms and floods. Announcements of tropical depressions strengthening into storms, heavy rains across the country, flash floods, and landslides causing tragedy for people and families in July have left us deeply concerned. Everyone longs for peace and tranquility in their daily lives. But to achieve that peace, many are struggling amidst the rain and floods.

In the sweltering heat or torrential rains of the changing seasons, the image of soldiers, troops, and police officers constantly stationed in disaster-stricken areas, amidst the swirling currents of danger, fighting to save lives, rescue homes, and secure belongings for those unfortunate enough to suffer... evokes profound emotion in everyone. We are immensely proud and honored to be Vietnamese. The unwavering belief of the entire nation, standing together in times of hardship and adversity, will overcome natural disasters and challenges together. This is a heroic anthem born from a love of life, imbued with deep philosophical insights.

The changing seasons evoke a flood of memories, a time that brings the most emotions to students and aspiring graduates, filled with mixed feelings as they stand at the threshold of life. Reunions, farewells, hastily written diary entries, innocent tears shed for each other as they must leave school, teachers, and dear friends to embark on an independent life.

During the transitional period between seasons, not only students but also parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents experience a mix of anxiety, nervousness, and indescribable excitement as they accompany their children and grandchildren through the exam season, hoping they will achieve their dreams and mark a major turning point in their lives. There's an outpouring of joy and tears upon hearing of high scores, or words of encouragement, comfort, and solace for those who didn't achieve their desired results. Many doors in life open for young people to step through and continue nurturing their aspirations and dreams. Amidst the vast sky, the sunshine, and the seasonal rains, we fully feel the boundless love that loved ones have for their children and grandchildren.

Welcoming the changing seasons far from home, under a stormy sky, my heart aches with longing for my homeland. In my old village, this season brings sudden storms and floods. Some years, floods come relentlessly. Small houses, impoverished people struggling along the river to weather the floods and storms. Unharvested fields, crops flattened by the wind – a heartbreaking sight, filled with sorrow and despair. Each rice stalk, each vegetable salvaged from the flooded fields, is imbued with the bitterness and hardship of the villagers.

I was born in a rural area with low-lying rice paddies, riverbanks, and bamboo groves, so I understand the hardships of my grandparents and parents, of those people with calloused hands and weathered clothes, who always had to "sell their faces to the earth and their backs to the sky" to produce the rice and potatoes that sustained generations. Just that alone is enough to stir up feelings of affection and nostalgia, enough to bring tears to my eyes at the changing seasons in my old hometown...
