After six years, indie duo Minh Toc & Lam release their third studio album, "Clouds on the Horizon," marking a clear maturation in the songwriting mindset and approach of the two artists.

Minh Toc & Lam's album, "Clouds on the Horizon, " has just been released on digital music platforms and includes 10 songs. The two lead singles, "Step By Step" and "Moonlight City," have already received positive feedback from listeners.

The album experiments with various genres such as Dance, Jazz Fusion, Afrobeat, Neo Soul, Math Rock, City Pop, and Synthwave. This diversity gives each song its own unique character while still maintaining the overall spirit of Minh Toc & Lam.

Clouds on the Horizon is structured in three stages: Germination - Blooming & Stagnation - Existential Crisis & Identity Achievement. This is not a random arrangement, but the result of the duo's "self-re-editing" process after completing the entire album.

Speaking to Tuổi Trẻ newspaper, Ngọc Lam shared that the songs weren't composed in chronological order, but rather scattered over many years, even during the COVID-19 pandemic. Afterward, they listened to them again and arranged them into a continuous flow of emotion, similar to analyzing a literary work.

The image of "clouds on the horizon" is used as a recurring metaphor. Behind the clouds may lie storms or tranquility, but humanity is still compelled to move forward to improve itself.

Clouds on the Horizon also reflects personal experiences, especially the period of inner crisis during the songwriting process. The pressures of creativity, direction, and the journey of development become the material for many songs in the album.

In Trouble Sleeping , the haunting memories are depicted through the lyrics: "Memories keep replaying in my head / The dark night is lonely, I'm all alone." Meanwhile, Moonlight City evokes a feeling of loneliness in the urban environment: "No one hears the rain falling in my heart / Loneliness traps me in this room."

In the title track "Clouds on the Horizon ," the metaphorical imagery is heightened: "Not lost amidst the clouds / But opening my eyes, I only see the rain / Time still flows / Through fingers trying to hold on." These lyrics contribute to completing the emotional thread throughout, from fragility and despair to confrontation and letting go.

Indie was something I once wanted to give up on.

Sharing more about his indie journey, Minh Toc said that what kept him going was also what had once made him want to give up: "After each such experience, when I returned to music, I realized I was doing something meaningful, which was contributing to Vietnamese music and bringing the voices of young people to the outside world."

Meanwhile, Ngoc Lam believes it's important to broaden the perspective on independent artists: "We want to show that indie artists don't necessarily have to be associated with images like edgy, gritty, or rustic. Indie, in essence, is just a production method where you do everything yourself and have the right to decide on your music."

Ngoc Lam added: "If you look at it from a practical perspective, the question is: 'Can you make a living making indie music?' The answer is yes. We can still make a living from music. We may not have a house or a car yet, but in the next few years, we are confident that we can still provide for our families and let our children grow up surrounded by a love of music."

According to both of them, inspiring young artists while also receiving inspiration from them is what motivates them to continue. After 6 years, Minh Toc & Lam believe they are gradually becoming a "link" in the development of Vietnamese indie music.
