| From the story of teacher and student carving stones to plant trees. Mr. Lùng Ngấn Thăng, a physics teacher and former head of the labor committee at Si Ma Cai No. 2 High School, recalled: "A few years ago, the entire school only had three single-story buildings. The school grounds and classrooms were bare and desolate, with nothing but earth and rocks everywhere you looked. The students dreamed of having a shady tree to sit under and read aloud to each other after class; they didn't dream of anything more extravagant. The school's greening committee was established, along with the labor committee, to plan and plant trees. Every class enthusiastically volunteered. Planting trees sounds easy, but the actual work was incredibly difficult. The ground was full of boulders; the hoes and shovels would bounce back up, bending the blades. I remember those days, the teachers and students had to use crowbars to dig until sparks flew and blistered their hands. After several days, they only managed to dig a few holes less than three handspans deep."
Sweat poured down, effort poured in for weeks and months, and finally, several rows of holes were dug. The banyan and flame trees, brought from the lowlands, were planted, their vibrant green foliage brimming with life, filled with hope. The students took turns tending to them daily, carefully watering them, hoping they would grow quickly. But for some reason, every tree was stunted, like "premature babies." When winter came, the teacher... - Tears welled up in the students' eyes as they watched the trees wither away in the fog and freezing cold… According to Teacher Thang's account, after that incident, the students went back to the fields to sow tung tree seeds, but they also failed because some were destroyed by buffaloes and cows, and others couldn't survive the winter. You may also like With renewed determination to green the school grounds, teachers and students diligently climbed kilometers up steep cliffs, uprooting yellow flowering trees, banyan trees, fig trees, and small saplings to plant, and cutting bamboo to fence off the trees to prevent buffaloes and cows from damaging them… Days and months passed, and the joy of the teachers and students was indescribable as they saw the trees they had planted grow greener each day. During recess, the students rushed out to surround each of their class's treebeds, watching the young shoots sprout, touching the lush green leaves with pride and happiness. To this day, although none of the trees provide shade, the school grounds are gradually becoming greener. In just a few more years, the schoolyard will be covered in green trees, fulfilling the dreams of generations of students. The trees have thus become an invaluable asset, cherished and preserved by the teachers and students of Si Ma Cai No. 2 High School like precious gems. Let's learn a valuable lesson about environmental protection. In this land of drought and harsh climate, where every drop of water is precious, and life is fraught with difficulties, even a simple meal is scarce, the dedication of teachers and students at Si Ma Cai No. 2 High School year after year, overcoming hardships to plant trees and carefully conserve water, is truly admirable. Visiting Si Ma Cai No. 2 High School, I realized that the concept of a "friendly school" is no longer abstract here. Through each labor session on the school grounds, teachers and students become closer and understand each other better. A tree is just a tree if it grows naturally in the forest, but on this barren land, each row of green trees embodies the culmination of a love for labor and the sincere, warm affection between teachers and students. Through their labor, the students have created a green, clean, and beautiful school campus, a healthy learning and playing environment, a second home that fulfills their dreams. Through planting and caring for trees, cleaning the school grounds, and not littering in public places, each student has contributed their small effort to adding more greenery to their beloved school. Educating students about environmental protection is a crucial issue today. To effectively address this, schools in the province need to pay more attention to creating and maintaining green, clean, and beautiful school grounds; enacting specific regulations on environmental protection; and incorporating environmental awareness as a criterion for evaluating and ranking teachers and students. These are important measures that contribute to building a friendly school environment, so that green schools in Lao Cai are no longer just a dream for many students. | ||
