A landslide occurred in the Rú Rác area of Trung Thành village, Cẩm Trung commune, on the morning of November 3rd.

On the morning of November 3rd, due to the impact of prolonged heavy rain, serious landslides occurred in the Ru Rac area of Cam Trung commune at two locations in Trung Thanh village and village 6, causing thousands of cubic meters of soil and rocks to pour down from the mountain onto the agricultural land of local people.

Fortunately, the landslide did not cause any casualties, but it flattened three farms belonging to three households: Vo Van Phu, Nguyen Truong Tuan, and Tran Huu Ngu. The farmland was covered in mud and rocks, destroying fish ponds, ginseng gardens, fruit trees, annual crop areas, houses, and cars. The estimated damage amounts to billions of dong.

Landslides caused significant damage to three households with farms in the Rú Rác area.

According to Le Hong Linh, Head of the Economic Department of Cam Trung Commune People's Committee: The Ru Rac area consists of many mountains. After the heavy rains from October 29th to November 4th, in addition to the two serious landslide locations in Hamlet 6 and Trung Thanh Hamlet, Ru Rac also experienced many other landslides, affecting the agricultural land of the people.

Due to the prolonged heavy rain, landslides have also occurred in many places along the coastal defense road and the coastal road in Ha Tinh province, particularly in the Cam Linh commune area. Both of these roads share a common feature: sections run through high hills and mountains.

“The geological foundation of the local hills is mainly sandy soil, interspersed with loose rocks. When there is heavy and prolonged rainfall, the weak geological foundation is soaked with rainwater for a long time, breaking down its cohesion and leading to frequent landslides, greatly affecting the lives and production activities of the people,” informed Le Hong Linh, Head of the Economic Department of Cam Trung Commune People's Committee.

Northern provinces and cities are proactively responding to heavy rain, flash floods, and landslides.
Northern provinces and cities are proactively responding to heavy rain, flash floods, and landslides. On the afternoon of June 4th, the National Steering Committee for Civil Defense issued document No. 18/BCĐ-BNNMT to the People's Committees of the provinces and cities in Northern Vietnam regarding proactive response to heavy rain, flash floods, landslides, tornadoes, lightning, hail, and flooding.
The coastal road in Ha Tinh province, passing through Ky Xuan commune, has suffered serious erosion and is currently impassable.

According to the Ha Tinh Meteorological and Hydrological Station, the total rainfall measured from October 29th to November 4th ranged from 600 to 1,400 mm. The heavy rain not only caused widespread flooding, seriously affecting people's lives, but also resulted in severe landslides on many transportation routes, such as National Highway 12C, National Highway 8, National Highway 281; and Provincial Roads 551, 554, and 547.

In particular, on provincial road 547 (also known as the Ha Tinh coastal road), many sections have suffered serious landslides that cannot be cleared or repaired due to unfavorable weather conditions. The Department of Construction has been forced to close the road and reroute traffic through Ky Xuan and Cam Trung communes, directing vehicles to use alternative routes.

Since the end of August, there have been several periods of heavy rain affecting localities in Ha Tinh province. After the heavy rains, the soil in the hilly and mountainous areas has become saturated with water. On some hillsides and embankments along the road, cracks have appeared, and the soil has been severely washed away and eroded.

In Ha Tinh province, many residential areas are built close to the foot of mountains or along mountainous roads. When the soil is saturated with water, even minor rain or tremors can cause landslides and erosion.

A large crack in the Chua mountain range threatens the homes of residents living at the foot of the mountain in Xuan Lam 1 hamlet, Bac Hong Linh ward, Ha Tinh province.

According to statistics from the Standing Office of the Steering Committee for Disaster Prevention and Control (Provincial Civil Defense Steering Committee), after the heavy rains, the entire province currently has many areas at high risk of landslides, concentrated in localities such as: Vu Quang, Mai Hoa, Son Giang, Son Hong, Son Tien, Phuc Trach, Huong Xuan, Ky Lac, Ky Thuong, Ky Van, Son Kim 1, Duc Tho, Bac Hong Linh, Thach Khe….

In areas at risk of landslides, many are located near residential areas, posing a significant risk if a landslide were to occur.

Landslides are a constant threat to residential areas located at the foot of hills and mountains in Ha Tinh province.

"After heavy rains, the soil moisture is high, the soil cohesion is very poor, and the risk of landslides is very high, especially in areas where landslides have occurred before, and along rivers and streams," assessed Mr. Tran Duc Thinh - Head of the Irrigation Sub-Department, Chief of the Standing Office of the Disaster Prevention and Control Command (Provincial Civil Defense Command).

Residents living at the foot of Nam Gioi mountain in Tan Phong village, Thach Khe commune - where a landslide occurred in 2020 - are always worried whenever there is heavy and prolonged rain.

Meanwhile, Tran Duc Ba, Director of the Ha Tinh Meteorological and Hydrological Station, said: Due to the influence of the distant circulation of typhoon No. 3, Ha Tinh is forecast to have moderate to heavy rain, with rainfall generally ranging from 50-100mm, and locally exceeding 150mm in some areas. This rainfall is not excessively heavy; however, in hilly and mountainous areas with weak geological foundations and high water saturation, there is a high risk of landslides.

Residents in Son Giang commune are building retaining walls behind their houses to prevent landslides and soil erosion.

Given the complex weather developments, localities in Ha Tinh province have proactively reviewed high-risk areas for landslides, implemented response measures, issued warnings, and closely monitored weather developments to proactively evacuate and relocate residents from dangerous areas.

During prolonged heavy rains, residents living at the foot of mountains and on slopes should closely monitor any unusual occurrences around their homes, such as cracks in the ground, tilting walls, or sinking foundations. These are warning signs of potential landslides. Upon detection, they should immediately report to the local authorities for appropriate action to prevent loss of life and property.
