Monash University (Australia) is introducing for the first time a full scholarship program worth AUD 2.5 million (approximately VND 42.6 billion), a comprehensive financial support package for students from Southeast Asia studying at the university's campuses.

The Vice-Chancellor's ASEAN Awards scholarship was introduced by Monash at the Australia-ASEAN Business Forum 2025 held in Adelaide, Australia on August 26, 2025. The program will provide financial support to outstanding undergraduate students from Southeast Asia studying at Monash from Semester 1, 2026.

The program is implemented with the goal of completely reducing the financial burden of studying for international students, including tuition fees, travel, relocation, visa fees, and other services, opening up opportunities for university students from 10 ASEAN member countries.

According to Professor Sharon Pickering, Vice-Chancellor and Chair of Monash University, this program clearly demonstrates Monash's commitment to providing world-class education while strengthening strong regional ties. “Southeast Asia is a vibrant region with rapid development, diversity, and abundant talent. Monash is committed to supporting the next generation of leaders and change-makers from ASEAN countries, and contributing to a more open and collaborative future for the entire region,” Professor Sharon Pickering shared.

“Since 1961, Monash has been a study destination for ASEAN students, and they have helped shape the university’s development. Today, Monash is an international university deeply connected to ASEAN. This program further reinforces that deep connection – through our student and alumni communities, research, and collaborative projects – as well as our commitment to delivering transformative education and research for the region. Monash currently has the largest number of ASEAN students in Australia, with over 16,000, including 7,700 studying in Victoria. Combined with a network of nearly 60,000 alumni, including those holding leadership positions in government, business, and the community, Monash has affirmed its central role in building sustainable soft diplomacy in the region,” said Professor Sharon Pickering.

Australian Assistant Minister for Education, Hon Julian Hill MP, affirmed that this new program has once again underscored the crucial role of international education in shaping the future of the Indo-Pacific region.

“International education not only enriches the knowledge economy and cultural life of countries in the region, but also serves as a foundation for promoting cooperation and sustainable development. Australia is proud to play a pioneering role in this global exchange. Scholarship programs like the Vice-Chancellor's ASEAN Awards are clear evidence of the pioneering role of leading universities like Monash in creating opportunities for outstanding students, while fostering innovation, strengthening cooperation, and fostering mutual understanding across the region,” Mr. Hill emphasized.

Eligible scholarship recipients will be selected through a competitive process with quotas allocated by country to ensure broad representation across the region. Accordingly, undergraduate students from Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam are all eligible to apply.

Monash University has a strong presence in Southeast Asia, with campuses in Malaysia and Indonesia, as well as offices in China and India. In addition, Monash's alumni network and research activities within ASEAN are continuously expanding. As a pioneer, Monash consistently leads in promoting educational exchange, international cooperation, and student recruitment across the Indo-Pacific region.

The launch of the Monash Vice-Chancellor's ASEAN Awards is a significant addition to Monash University's comprehensive engagement strategy with the region, reflecting the strategic priorities of the Australian Government and the ASEAN community. Professor Pickering, currently a member of the first ASEAN-Australia Centre Advisory Board established by the Australian Government in 2024, continues to play a pioneering role in fostering deeper collaboration and engagement in the region.
