New student Truong Thi Hong Hanh is one of the first students to receive the Vice-Chancellor's ASEAN Awards Scholarship, a new scholarship program aimed at supporting Southeast Asian students studying at Monash University. This scholarship will provide comprehensive financial support for Hong Hanh as she pursues the Advanced Placement Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy program in the 2026 academic year.
The Vice-Chancellor's ASEAN Awards scholarship, totaling AUD 2.5 million (approximately VND 43.7 billion), is designed to support outstanding undergraduate students in the ASEAN region, completely easing the financial burden of their studies, including tuition fees, travel, accommodation, visa fees, and other services.
The scholarship has a competitive selection process and is open to outstanding candidates from 10 ASEAN member countries: Vietnam, Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand.
Following the introduction of the ASEAN Awards Scholarships in August 2025, Monash University continues to demonstrate its commitment to the ASEAN region through a new scholarship program – the ASEAN Pathway, worth AUD 1 million (approximately VND 17.5 billion). This program supports outstanding ASEAN students during their studies at Monash College – a preparatory institution offering programs such as Diplomas and Foundation Years, helping students prepare for and transition to Monash University.
Truong Thi Hong Hanh, representing Vietnam, successfully passed the rigorous selection process and won a full scholarship, beginning her studies at Monash in 2026. Hong Hanh said she is extremely excited about the opportunity to study in Melbourne, a city with many cherished family memories.
Hong Hanh shared: “My father earned a Master's degree in Digital Communication from Monash, and my older sister also lives in Melbourne, so I am very happy to continue the family tradition.”
Hong Hanh shared her reasons for choosing Monash University and applying for the ASEAN Awards scholarship: “The Covid-19 pandemic has motivated me to want to contribute to the field of vaccine research and development in the future. I researched many universities in Australia, and Monash's highly ranked pharmacy program impressed me. I feel very grateful that, thanks to this scholarship program, I can get closer to my dream job.”

Professor Sharon Pickering, Vice-Chancellor of Monash University, said that Hong Hanh's story is the reason Monash is always striving to make world-class education more accessible to countries in the region.
“More than just a financial aid program, the ASEAN Scholarship is designed to seek out talent, nurture aspirations, and open opportunities for students who wish to make a positive contribution to the community and society in the future. At the same time, the program aims to build a rich student community at Monash through the diverse perspectives and positive energy that students like Hanh bring,” Professor Sharon Pickering shared.
Since officially opening in 1961, Monash University has welcomed many students from Southeast Asia. The university currently has over 16,000 ASEAN students and nearly 60,000 alumni from the region. The ASEAN Awards and ASEAN Pathway scholarships are testaments to Monash's strong and enduring relationship with the region.
Monash has long pursued a strategy of deep engagement with Asia, demonstrated through its campuses in Malaysia and Indonesia, offices in China and India, and a growing alumni network and research activities throughout the ASEAN region. The university also consistently plays a leading role in academic exchange, partnerships, and student recruitment in the Indo-Pacific region.
