According to the approved plan, the Phan Thiet airport project in Thien Nghiep commune (Phan Thiet city) is a dual-use airport comprising both military and civilian components. Construction of Phan Thiet airport began in January 2015. To date, the military components have been operational for military flights by the Air Defense - Air Force Command since early August 2024. The road connecting Vo Nguyen Giap road to Phan Thiet airport has been opened to traffic and put into operation since early 2025. The civilian component, under a BOT (Build-Operate-Transfer) contract, is currently undergoing procedures to adjust the investment policy (upgrading from level 4C to 4E) with a runway length of 3,050m and a passenger terminal with a designed capacity of 2 million passengers per year.

Currently, the Department of Construction is coordinating with the consulting unit to finalize and prepare the feasibility study report for the Phan Thiet Airport project, preparing the final steps to restart the civil airport component. The revised pre-feasibility study report has been reviewed by the inter-ministerial appraisal council. The province is coordinating with the Ministry of National Defense to clearly define the components for defense, dual-use, and civilian purposes in order to expedite the investor selection process.

Recently, the People's Committee of Binh Thuan province submitted to the Prime Minister for consideration and approval an adjustment to the investment policy for the Phan Thiet airport project, specifically the civil aviation component, under a BOT (Build-Operate-Transfer) contract. This adjustment aims to proceed with the next steps and ensure the project is put into operation soon, avoiding waste. It also aims to maximize the effectiveness of the dual-use facilities designed to meet the load capacity and safety requirements for both civil and military aviation operations, as invested in by the Ministry of National Defense. The Phan Thiet airport project is of great importance, and the people eagerly await its early implementation and operation, ensuring the simultaneous functioning of both military and civilian purposes, contributing to attracting investment and promoting the socio -economic development of the province.
