Manchester United are reportedly interested in Donnarumma to solve their goalkeeping problem. |
On August 17th, MU suffered a disappointing 0-1 defeat against Arsenal at Old Trafford. Despite having a better game and creating more chances, a mistake by goalkeeper Altay Bayindir meant the "Red Devils" left empty-handed in their opening Premier League match.
Meanwhile, Arsenal's David Raya played brilliantly and was voted Man of the Match, highlighting the difference a goalkeeper can make. It's understandable why Manchester United want to add a quality goalkeeper. English media outlets have stated that Gianluigi Donnarumma is the ideal choice.
The 26-year-old goalkeeper has been left out of manager Luis Enrique's plans at PSG. He is valued at around £40 million and demands a salary of over £300,000 per week. Manchester United had previously denied any interest, but with Andre Onana and Bayindir consistently making mistakes, this is an option the club's management is considering.
The biggest problem is the wage bill. To make way for Donnarumma, MU will have to sell some players. Currently, there are six players on the transfer list: Antony, Jadon Sancho, Alejandro Garnacho, Tyrell Malacia, Rasmus Hojlund, and Onana. The total wages of this group amount to £685,000 per week, double the amount Donnarumma is demanding.
Several potential deals have emerged. Inter Milan want to bring Onana back, Chelsea are interested in Garnacho. Sancho is waiting for a new offer after rejecting Roma, while Hojlund is on the radar of AC Milan and Newcastle. Antony could return to Real Betis.
Besides the goalkeeper position, MU also wants to strengthen the midfield after missing out on Carlos Baleba from Brighton. Morten Hjulmand from Sporting Lisbon is a top target.
