One of India's most ambitious aviation projects, touted as one of the largest in South Asia, has officially opened more than four years after Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation.

"I am delighted to have the honor of laying the foundation stone and personally inaugurating this airport," Modi said at the ceremony on March 28.

This announcement provides a media boost for the Indian aviation industry, which is currently facing difficulties, especially as the world confronts fuel shortages due to conflicts in the Middle East.

Noida International Airport (code DXN) is located within the Delhi National Capital Region. With this project, Uttar Pradesh becomes the first state in India to have five international airports. This is considered the most significant step forward for the country's aviation industry since Navi Mumbai International Airport became operational in October 2025, serving the financial center of Mumbai.

CNN notes that the world's most populous nation, and the world's third-largest aviation market, is stepping up large-scale infrastructure investment.

However, Noida Airport is not yet ready to operate. Flights are expected to begin in mid-April and will be rolled out in phases. The initial goal is to serve 12 million passengers per year, gradually increasing to 70 million by 2050, a level that could surpass pre-war passenger volumes at Dubai Airport, currently one of the busiest airports in the world.

The total investment for the project reached 296 billion rupees (approximately 3.13 billion USD ). The airport was originally scheduled to open in September 2024 but was repeatedly delayed before officially becoming operational last weekend.

Dr. Subhash Goyal, Chairman of the National Committee on Tourism , Aviation and Accommodation Services, Indian Chamber of Commerce (ICC), said that Delhi, Agra and Jaipur will form a familiar "golden triangle" for first-time visitors to India.

India makes no secret of its ambition to compete with the world's leading tourism markets. Major cities like Paris, Beijing, and New York all have at least two airports to alleviate passenger congestion. The goal of Noida Airport is to connect the Greater Delhi region and western Uttar Pradesh with domestic and international cities.

"Aircraft will fly from here to all corners of the world, and this airport will become a symbol of a developing Uttar Pradesh. Noida is ready to welcome the whole world," said Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Officials expect the project to help alleviate congestion at the already overloaded Indira Gandhi International Airport. However, the Indian aviation industry is still struggling to keep up with growing demand.

Aviation expert Sanjay Lazar warns that the new airport is not a "magic bullet," especially given the limited transportation links to the capital.

Nevertheless, India continues to pursue its aviation development ambitions, with Modi at the helm. At the launch of Navi Mumbai airport last year, he stated that in 2014, India had 74 airports; more than a decade later, that number has surpassed 160 and continues to grow.

"India's aviation industry is booming, and this trend is expected to continue for at least the next two decades," Lazar stated.
