MU has not yet negotiated a new contract with Mainoo. |
According to internal sources, Manchester United have not reopened negotiations since Mainoo rejected his first contract extension offer 13 months ago. Last summer, the Carrington academy graduate even wanted to leave on loan. However, the club insisted on keeping him, despite Mainoo failing to make a single Premier League start under manager Ruben Amorim.
The situation only truly changed when Michael Carrick took over as manager. Mainoo was immediately given opportunities and started all six Premier League matches under the new regime, effectively silencing all speculation about his potential departure from Old Trafford. The club's management is reportedly pleased with the midfielder's progress and is ready to activate a contract extension plan at the appropriate time.
Mainoo currently has a contract until 2027, with an option to extend for another year. He signed his last agreement in February 2023 when he was just 17 years old and has since become a key player in midfield. His biggest highlight was scoring the winning goal in the 2024 FA Cup final, before starting in the Euro final with England that summer.
At the beginning of the season, the relationship between Mainoo and Amorim showed signs of strain, even leading to heated arguments at the Carrington training ground. The player's family was reportedly unhappy with how he was treated. Despite this, Mainoo never gave up his ambition to prove himself at MU.
At the national team level, manager Thomas Tuchel confirmed that Mainoo could be called up for the friendly matches against Uruguay and Japan next month. His last appearance for England was in September 2024.
