Báo Dân tộc và Phát triểnBáo Dân tộc và Phát triển12/03/2025

When the reeds in the forest are in season, it's also the time when many ethnic minority laborers in the Truong Son mountain range have more work. Gathering, drying, and transporting reeds has helped many laborers earn extra income to support their lives. Over the years, many ethnic minority Party members in Quang Binh have become leading figures in developing household economies . From there, the economic models built by Party members have guided and paved the way for the people to raise awareness, innovate their thinking in labor and production, increase income, and improve their quality of life. Party members in Hung village, Trong Hoa commune, Minh Hoa district are a typical example. On the morning of March 12th, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, Head of the National Steering Committee on Inclusive Finance, chaired the 2nd meeting of the Steering Committee; The goal is to ensure widespread, inclusive, comprehensive, and equitable access to finance, so that all citizens everywhere have equal access, benefit from, and are protected when accessing financial services. On March 12th, the People's Committee of Lak District, Dak Lak Province, organized the 4th Lak District Dugout Canoe Race at the picturesque Lak Lake. Attendees included the Standing Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Council, Tran Phu Hung; the Ambassador of the 9th Coffee Festival - Miss H'Hen Niê; representatives from various departments and agencies; district leaders, departments, organizations, and a large number of local people and tourists. Areca nut is a familiar fruit and also a useful medicinal herb in traditional medicine. Understanding the true effects of betel nuts will help you choose a better solution for using them in the treatment of diseases more effectively and safely for the health of patients. In recent years, scams targeting the elderly have increased with many sophisticated methods. With just a fake phone call or text message, many elderly people have lost tens, even hundreds of millions of dong. Why are the elderly so easily targeted and how can they be protected from this trap? Not only skilled in weaving, Elder A Nuong is also a living treasure of the Mo Nam people (a branch of the Xo Dang ethnic group) with his deep understanding of the customs, traditions, and culture of the village. He knows how to sing love songs, epic poems, and play gongs and drums, and has passed on his gong and drum playing skills to the younger generation in the village. With the changes of time, traditional festivals of ethnic minorities in Gia Lai province seem to be gradually fading away. Thanks to the efforts of the people, local authorities, and especially the funding from the National Target Program 1719, a strong connection has been created to preserve culture, spanning generations. This is a summary of news from the Ethnic Minorities and Development Newspaper. The morning news on March 12th includes the following noteworthy information: The festivals at Ha Temple, Thuong Temple, and Y La Temple in 2025; an ancient pagoda nestled deep within a cave in Hai Phong; starting a business in beekeeping for honey production; and other current events in the ethnic minority and mountainous regions. When the forest reeds are in season, it also provides additional employment for many ethnic minority workers in the Truong Son mountain range. Gathering, drying, and transporting reeds has helped many laborers earn extra income to support their lives. The People's Committee of Thanh Hoa province recently issued Decision No. 747/QD-UBND approving the Project to support people with meritorious services to the revolution and relatives of martyrs with housing in Thanh Hoa province, in accordance with Decision No. 21/2024/QD-TTg dated November 22, 2024, of the Prime Minister. Mùa đót đã mang lại thu nhập đáng kể cho bà Kăn Tin (dân tộc Tà Ôi), 67 tuổi, ở xã Hồng Hạ, huyện A Lưới (TP Huế)
The bamboo harvesting season has brought significant income to Mrs. Kan Tin (of the Ta Oi ethnic group), 67 years old, in Hong Ha commune, A Luoi district ( Hue City).

In early March, the first rays of sunshine begin to dispel the gloom and biting cold in the eastern part of the majestic Truong Son mountain range; it is also the time when many ethnic minority laborers in A Luoi district (Hue City); Huong Hoa and Dakrong districts ( Quang Tri province ) pack their lunches and carry baskets to harvest reeds.

Each year, the reed plant yields only one harvest, lasting from January to March according to the lunar calendar. In early February, the reed flowers are at their peak, producing the best yield and quality. This is also when the weather is favorable for going into the forest, so many people go to harvest reeds.

Ms. Kan Tin (of the Ta Oi ethnic group), 67 years old, residing in Hong Ha commune, A Luoi district (Hue City), has been harvesting reeds for many years. This year is no different; when the reeds in the forest are in season, she packs her lunch and heads into the forest to harvest them. Due to her family's difficult circumstances, harvesting reeds is a significant source of income for her to make ends meet.

After harvesting the reeds, Mrs. Kăn Tin sorts them before selling them to traders.

"Crawling into streams and climbing mountains and hills is very hard work. But in return, during this season, we can earn a few tens to a hundred thousand dong every day," Mrs. Tin shared.

In Hong Ha, many other Ta Oi ethnic people also rely on the reed harvesting season to earn extra income. Some go to the forest to harvest reeds, while others stay at home drying them...; those with skillful hands weave the reeds into brooms to sell to traders. Thus, when the forest reed harvest season arrives, many ethnic minority laborers in Hong Ha have additional work and income to support their lives.

The villagers carry baskets of reeds gathered from the forest back to sell to traders.

In Lao Bao town, Huong Hoa district (Quang Tri province), it has long been a center for collecting reeds to be transported to the lowlands. According to our reporter's investigation, there are more than 10 reed buyers in this town. The reeds are harvested from the forest by the Bru-Van Kieu ethnic group and supplied to these buyers. The buyers then hire local laborers, mainly from the Bru-Van Kieu and Ta Oi ethnic groups, to sort, dry, and load the reeds onto trucks for transport to the lowlands.

Lao Bao town, Huong Hoa district (Quang Tri province) has become a center for the collection of firewood.

Ms. Ho Thi Ven (of the Ta Oi ethnic group) from A Rong village, Lia commune, Huong Hoa district - a worker drying reeds at the Lao Bao town stadium - said: "Because of my leg pain, I can't go to the forest to gather reeds, so I come here to dry them for hire for the shop owner. I get paid 250,000 VND per day."

Reed grass is the main raw material for making cleaning brooms and brooms used for painting in construction, so the market demand is large. To meet the demand, traders collect reed grass from ethnic minority villages in the Truong Son mountain range of Vietnam. Traders even extend their reach to neighboring Laos to purchase reed grass. From hundreds of directions, the reed grass is gathered in Lao Bao town. Taking advantage of dry days, stadiums and open spaces are used to dry the reed grass.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Thanh Tu, a reed purchasing agent, said: "The reed harvesting season is the time that creates the most jobs for local people. Besides harvesting reeds, we also hire laborers to dry them, transport them, and sort them..."

Hiện chủ hàng thu mua đót với giá giao động từ 8-10 ngàn đồng/1kg đót tươi.
Currently, buyers are purchasing fresh reeds at prices ranging from 8,000 to 10,000 VND per kilogram.

The Truong Son mountain range boasts many types of forest products that contribute to poverty reduction for ethnic minority communities. The bamboo plant is a prime example; however, it's time we adopted a longer-term perspective, not relying solely on natural, seasonal forest products for exploitation, but also considering the potential for sustainable prosperity, because any resource that is overexploited will eventually run out.

Therefore, it is also necessary to have a plan for protecting and cultivating the reed plant. Furthermore, there is a need for projects to create livelihoods for the people, such as planting reeds to create a stable source of income for ethnic minorities in the Eastern Truong Son Mountains.
