From early morning, the people of Poi Lanh village, Muong Va commune, were out in the fields harvesting rice. Stopping his harvesting, Mr. Lo Van Thoa said: "My family planted over 1,000 square meters, mainly with the sticky rice variety 86. Thanks to the concrete-paved roads in the fields, I can bring the threshing machine right to the field, making harvesting very convenient. This spring rice crop, my family harvested nearly 30 bags of rice."
Muong Va commune has the largest area of spring rice cultivation in Sop Cop district, with over 270 hectares, mainly planted with glutinous rice varieties 86, 87, and 97, which produce sticky, fragrant rice that is popular in the market. In addition, the commune maintains over 60 hectares of Tan glutinous rice, a specialty rice variety with high economic value, which is being developed as part of a commodity production chain linked to consumption.
Meanwhile, in the rice fields of Sop Cop commune, the harvesting is underway with urgency. This year, the commune planted 53 hectares of spring rice. Mr. Lo Van Dung, Chairman of the People's Committee of the commune, said: The commune has directed the villages to disseminate information and mobilize farmers to utilize all available resources and manpower to quickly harvest the spring rice crop, while also preparing the conditions for planting the summer crop to ensure timely completion. To date, the people in the commune have harvested over 90% of the area, with a yield of approximately 55 quintals/hectare.
This spring, Sop Cop district planted over 3,000 hectares of rice. In recent years, farmers in Sop Cop district have actively promoted mechanization in production, especially in harvesting. Rice threshing machines have been brought directly to the fields, saving farmers time and reducing labor. Previously, each household took nearly a week to harvest, but now it only takes 2-3 days to complete. Transporting the rice home is also more convenient thanks to the rural road system and the concrete-paved field roads. In addition, farmers practice mutual assistance in harvesting, reducing labor costs and strengthening solidarity.
Mr. Lo Van Thai, Deputy Head of the Agriculture and Environment Department of Sop Cop District, said: To date, farmers in the district have basically completed the spring harvest. The department has sent officials to coordinate with communes to encourage farmers to prepare the land, seeds, materials, and fertilizers for planting the summer rice crop. Communes have mobilized more than 7,500 people to clear 11.3 km of canals, unblock waterways, address vulnerable points at risk of landslides, prevent floods, and ensure conditions for summer crop production.
