While spring brings a surge of tourists to Japan during the cherry blossom season, autumn, with its trees turning vibrant shades of yellow and red, also attracts many visitors to the country.
In autumn, many places boast impressive scenery as the leaves change color, such as Osaka, Tokyo, and Kyoto, which have become popular tourist destinations in Japan.
The autumn foliage season, with its golden and red leaves, is considered peak tourist season in Japan. Due to the high demand for travel, many tour operators and travel companies have launched tours to see the autumn leaves in the country.
According to The Japan Times, this year, the Japan Meteorological Corp. reported that the leaves in Tokyo will turn their most vibrant yellow on November 26th and deep red on December 1st. This is also the time when the trees in Osaka will be in a similar state.
However, autumn colors arrive later in Nagano and Sapporo. The leaves in these two cities will turn yellow and red on November 8th and November 23rd, respectively, about 11 days later than the annual average.

According to the weather forecasting company Japan Meteorological Corp, cold weather will cause leaves to change color more quickly. If the weather is warm, this change will be slower. This is because autumn temperatures in 2024 are expected to be higher than last year due to the lingering effects of the summer weather. This year, Japan experienced its hottest summer on record.
"When temperatures drop below 10 degrees Celsius, green leaves begin to turn yellow and red," Hiroki Ito, a representative of the Japan Meteorological Corp., told The Japan Times.
Therefore, the autumn foliage season will arrive on schedule or slightly later in the north and east. In western regions, the autumn leaves will arrive on schedule. The red foliage season will be later than usual throughout the country.
Every year, Japan announces the cherry blossom blooming schedule in spring, as well as the times when the leaves turn yellow and red in autumn, to help domestic and international tourists plan their visits.
The timing of autumn foliage is based on the time when ginkgo leaves change color. The autumn foliage season is based on the time when maple trees change color.
Further forecasts regarding the autumn foliage season will be released at the end of October.
