Remembering Mother during the Vu Lan Festival

Many poems have been written about parents, especially mothers. In each poem, the author conveys the feelings of a child towards their father and mother.

Author Trinh Bich Ngan remembers her deceased mother, but it seems her mother still lives on through the invisible wave of familial love connecting the two realms of the living and the dead: "Even though parents are on the other side of the sky, separated, the waves of the living and the dead still beat in rhythm, full of love." Author Le Thieu Nhon remembers his mother as the door of a house that never closes, waiting for her child to return, the warmest and safest place: "That door withstands all misfortunes and troubles, because my mother's heart is the final barrier."

The seventh lunar month of each year is also the season of Vu Lan, a time for filial piety. The Saigon Giai Phong newspaper introduces the poems "Yin-Yang Waves" by Trinh Bich Ngan and "The Unclosed Door " by Le Thieu Nhon.

Yin and Yang waves

First birthday

My mother is no longer alive.

I am alone

sit and cry

***

Drop by drop

orphaned

silently

My heart is pounding.

***

In front of me

steaming cappuccino

The Kalanchoe plant blooms with a hesitant, uncertain expression.

The surface of Xuan Huong Lake ripples with breath.

The church in the biting mist, the ringing of bells.

***

Life expectancy

and age

sea waves

the bustling dawn

rolling sunset

***

Even though parents

on the other side of the sky

distance

Yin and Yang waves

still clapping

Love.

The door is not closed.

I returned to that door.

Through many stormy seasons, I've traveled far.

The door was never completely closed.

Like a mother's heart opening up day by day.

***

I keep dreaming of those shores.

When life plays tricks on you

Once again, I hid behind that door.

***

And the baby slept soundly.

And I dreamt so peacefully.

That door protects against all gossip and misfortune.

Because a mother's heart is the last line of defense.
