Chery Group brought a range of models to the Bangkok International Motor Show (BIMS) 2025. Among them, perhaps the most notable is the new 2025 Jaecoo J5 EV electric vehicle . This compact SUV was unveiled in October 2024, but the electric version is entirely new.

The all-electric Jaecoo J5 EV is expected to retain the same dimensions as its internal combustion engine version. If so, the car will have dimensions of 4,380 x 1,860 x 1,650 mm (length x width x height) and a wheelbase of 2,620 mm. With these dimensions, the car will be positioned in the B-segment SUV category.

The Jaecoo J5 EV has a significantly different appearance compared to the internal combustion engine version, at least at the front. Here, the characteristic waterfall grille of Jaecoo vehicles has disappeared, replaced by a transparent strip with the word "Jaecoo" on it, connecting to the slim rectangular headlights, creating a minimalist yet modern look.

Below, this electric SUV features a large rectangular air intake with perforated panels, painted in the same color as the body, combined with a simple, smaller air vent. This represents a fresh departure from the current trend of increasingly aggressive vehicle designs, as seen in the Jaecoo J5 EV.

However, the Jaecoo J5 EV still has an overall design style similar to the luxury SUV Range Rover Evoque, with a clamshell-style hood, simple creases along the sides, horizontal LED taillights, a large rear spoiler, and a black diffuser.

Unlike other Jaecoo models, the J5 EV uses traditional door handles instead of those that are recessed into the body. The A-pillar is not painted black, which helps the car look less like Land Rover's SUV models.

Inside, the Jaecoo J5 EV boasts a minimalist interior with a waterfall-style dashboard, integrating a vertically oriented 13.2-inch infotainment screen and a steering wheel shared with its sibling, the Omoda C9. The car has very few physical buttons, only three for controlling driving modes, warning lights, and locking the doors.

This frees up space for the center console, allowing Chery to fit two smartphone chargers, two cup holders, and an open storage compartment underneath. Jaecoo advertises the J5 EV as a "pet-friendly" SUV.

To achieve this, the vehicle is equipped with extendable seats for greater pet comfort, a powerful air filter to trap pet hair, a smart air conditioning system, and antibacterial devices to limit bacterial growth. The company will also offer accessories such as feeding devices and steps for small pets.

Additionally, the J5 EV is designed for outdoor activities with a towing capacity of up to 1,250 kg, a roof rack with a load capacity of 75 kg, charging ports, luggage hooks in the trunk, and a multi-functional camping light. The car's 1.45 m² panoramic sunroof is claimed to be the largest in its segment.

Interestingly, the Jaecoo J5 EV has a completely different powertrain compared to its older sibling, the J6. While the J6 offers rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive options, the J5 EV is front-wheel drive only. It's equipped with a single electric motor producing a maximum power of 211 horsepower (155 kW) and a maximum torque of 288 Nm, allowing it to accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 7.7 seconds.

Despite being smaller and having a lower battery capacity than the J6, at only 60.9 kWh, the Jaecoo J5 EV boasts a range of 470 km according to NEDC standards, far exceeding the 426 km of its larger sibling.

Based on the more practical WLTP standard, the J5 EV's range could reach approximately 400 km, while the rear-wheel-drive J6 only achieves 371 km. The Jaecoo J5 EV is expected to use BYD's Blade lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) battery. The release date and price of the 2025 Jaecoo J5 EV in the Thai market have not yet been announced.

All we know is that the car will launch in the Malaysian market in the fourth quarter of this year or early 2026. It's highly likely that it will be assembled at the Shah Alam plant in Malaysia, alongside other Jaecoo models, to benefit from tax incentives in the coming years. Besides Indonesia, Thailand, and Malaysia, the Jaecoo J5 EV may also be sold in Vietnam.
