Implementing a two-tiered local government model after the merger, Muong Khieng commune has a total natural area of 20,420 hectares, with a total population of over 24,500 people, belonging to four ethnic groups: Thai, La Ha, Khang, and Kinh, living together. The commune has many advantages for economic development, such as favorable natural conditions for developing fruit trees, forestry, and medicinal plants... In addition, there are 1,030 hectares of water surface area in the Son La hydroelectric reservoir for aquaculture. Most importantly, the commune also has a significant advantage in attracting investment in community tourism, agricultural experience tourism, and aquaculture.

Welcoming us at the commune's People's Committee headquarters, Mr. Luong Van Quyet, Chairman of the Muong Khieng Commune People's Committee, shared: After operating under the new model, the Party Committee and People's Committee of the commune have led and directed the people to continue exploiting the potential and strengths of developing high-tech agriculture . At the same time, they have attracted businesses, organizations, and individuals to invest in agriculture, building production, processing, consumption, and export chains... The commune strives to reduce the poverty rate by an average of about 3% per year during the 2026-2030 period; and by 2030, there will be no more poor households according to the multidimensional poverty standard of the 2021-2025 period.

Currently, the people in the commune are diligently caring for over 1,052 hectares of various fruit trees, yielding approximately 4,000 tons of fruit per year; over 247 hectares of coffee trees (63.6 hectares not yet producing fruit), yielding over 165 tons of fresh fruit per year; and maintaining 236 hectares of rubber trees, with a harvested latex yield of 569 tons per year. Simultaneously, they continue to cultivate over 2,773 hectares of grain crops, yielding nearly 6,218 tons; and plant nearly 490 hectares of cassava, taro, and various vegetables. In the livestock sector, the people maintain and develop both the quantity and quality of livestock farming towards family farms and household production. They effectively implement disease prevention and control measures, as well as protection against cold and hunger for livestock and poultry. Currently, the entire commune has nearly 26,400 head of livestock and over 91,800 head of poultry.

Visiting Puc Tuan village, Muong Khieng commune, Mr. Lo Van Thanh, Secretary and Head of the village, said: The village management board has encouraged villagers to promote the application of advanced technology in production, improving the productivity and quality of agricultural products. Visiting the approximately 3,000 m² winter squash garden of Mr. Lo Van Cuong in Luong Ha village, Muong Khieng commune, one can feel the dynamism in agricultural production development among the local farmers. Mr. Cuong shared: "In 2024, instead of growing rice for one season, I discussed with my family the possibility of switching to growing and caring for winter squash as a clean product to meet consumer demand. In the 2025 season, we expect to harvest about 30 tons of winter squash, earning over 100 million VND."

Besides boosting production, the economic landscape of Muong Khieng has become more diverse with the development of service businesses and a rich commodity market, meeting the production and consumption needs of the people. Currently, the commune has over 300 households engaged in service businesses, mainly selling groceries, clothing, shoes, household goods, and food services; trading in construction materials, agricultural products, and local specialties; supplying plant seeds and agricultural supplies; and repairing motorbikes... with an average revenue of 150 million VND per household, meeting the needs of the people and contributing to job creation and increased income for business households.

The people of Luong Ha village have developed poultry farming.

Regarding future economic development directions, the Chairman of the People's Committee of Muong Khieng commune added: The commune is encouraging the establishment of cooperatives, organizing closed-loop production, and linking various stages in the value chain to reduce costs and increase efficiency. At the same time, it is promoting production-trade linkages, coordinating support for production facilities, businesses, and cooperatives producing agricultural products to build brands. In particular, it is coordinating with the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism to develop a project for community tourism and experiential tourism in the Son La hydroelectric reservoir area; and preparing a dossier to request recognition as a "National Tourist Area in the Son La Hydroelectric Reservoir Area" according to the province's policy. This will create more jobs and income for the people.

Bidding farewell to Muong Khieng under the March sun, we believe that with a clear development roadmap and steady steps, the goal of eliminating poverty by 2030 will soon become a reality. The synergy between the potential of the hydroelectric reservoir, the strengths of fruit cultivation, and the keen economic thinking of the people is creating a new face for this land.
