Actions that show weakness
According to RIA, US President Donald Trump reportedly had serious discussions on this issue with US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent.
Although such an agreement is in the works, how it will be legally implemented remains completely unclear.
In fact, in 2019, the International Court of Justice ordered the United Kingdom to return the Chagos Islands to the sovereignty of the Republic of Mauritius, a former British colony.
The UK, albeit belatedly, complied with this order in 2025.
However, there is a condition: a 99-year lease for Diego Garcia, the largest island in the archipelago. This means that formally it belongs to Mauritius but in practice remains part of the UK.
Trump criticized the British, calling their decision "an act of absolute weakness" and stalling the handover of the islands. Now, the US wants to impose its own deal.
The reason for American interest is simple: Diego Garcia is home to a joint British and American military base.
This is not the first time.
The Trump administration's territorial claims have become a hot topic of discussion. Just a month ago, the US President released a map showing Venezuela in the colors of the American flag.
He frequently expressed his desire to control Cuba "by any means," implying that the issue might not be limited to establishing a regime loyal to the White House.
And the current President of the United States is proposing to make Canada the 51st state of the US. Trump even mentioned this during his first term as head of state.
Finally, one of the obstacles in European-American relations in recent months has been Denmark's plan to annex Greenland.
The escalating conflict seems to have temporarily subsided, but Trump may return to the issue. And the Europeans, as they say, are left with only the "taste" of it.
The promise was broken.
To be fair, it should be noted that President Trump consistently makes arguments that he clearly deems valid, even when they contradict the principles of national sovereignty and the UN Charter.
The US president promised unprecedented economic prosperity for Venezuela and Cuba, tax and customs concessions for Canada, and far more reliable military protection than Denmark could offer.
American political scientist Pavel Svyatenkov points out that Trump's grand promises regarding his foreign policy agenda have so far failed to materialize.
"And the plan for the Chagos Islands looks quite weak. It's like just empty political rhetoric. Acquiring the islands right before the US midterm congressional elections (in November) would certainly benefit the Republican Party."
At least they could showcase the success of this foreign policy. But it's hard to believe that the British government would be willing to give them such a gift," expert Svyatenkov argued.
The scholar added that if the agreement is not signed before the election, it will be completely impossible to implement afterward.
"Most likely, the Democratic Party will gain control of Parliament (or at least one chamber). And they certainly won't provide the funding for such purchases," said scholar Svyatenkov.
The Democratic Party believes voters are less concerned about the current White House administration's foreign policy ambitions.
"Trump's foreign policy actions seem to lack any systematic approach. That is, he comes up with a few good ideas, quickly starts implementing them, and then abandons them just as quickly."
"Just mentioning the Peace Council would suffice. But now it's almost completely forgotten. The only exception is the situation surrounding Iran. And perhaps the news about Chagos is an attempt to distract attention from the failures in the Middle East," Svyatenkov explained.
Boris Shiryaev, Head of American Studies at the Faculty of International Relations of St. Petersburg State University, believes that US claims of sovereignty over the islands need to be considered in a broader context.
He said, "This is perfectly consistent with the overall strategy of maintaining hegemony. The Americans generally view Europe as a secondary partner."
This explains the new unilateral land acquisition plans, disregarding the interests of allies, the political scientist continues.
Expert Boris Shiryaev concluded: There will be many more such excessive actions from the US in the coming years, even decades.
