The new year is a time when most people think about ways they want to change for the better. According to Statista, about 21% of Americans want to save more money in 2025, 19% want to eat healthier, and 17% want to exercise more. What can you do to have a happier life?
Reduce hatred to be happier.
Throughout the years, you sometimes hold onto unpleasant memories. Every time you think about the past and the people who made you unhappy, you feel angry – even if you haven't spoken to them in years.
Science has proven the positive effects of letting go of resentment, reducing anger, and especially reducing anxiety and stress, which will boost the immune system, according to the Mayo Clinic. And the great thing is, "you can let go of resentment yourself," Weiss says.
One way to do this is to write a letter to the person you're angry with, but you don't have to send it. "Picking up a pen and writing on paper will release the anger, anxiety, thoughts, or any feelings you're experiencing," Weiss says.
Listen fully.
In conversations, we often listen only with the intention of responding and responding, to the point of not paying full attention to the content of the conversation.
This is fairly common, according to Weiss. But there's a benefit to focusing more on what the other person is saying, rather than thinking about how you're going to respond. People like to feel heard, and "when people feel heard, they naturally like you more."
To improve your listening skills, Weiss recommends asking more questions and reducing the tendency to listen only to get the floor. Let the other person speak, and learn to listen wholeheartedly.
Read more books.
"Reading actually offers many of the same benefits as meditation," Weiss said, "reading calms the mind in the same way that meditation does."
Weiss recommends reading for 20 minutes each day. "No phone, no TV, just 20 minutes of reading," she says. It's not a long time, but it will yield many benefits.
It's easy to set goals at the beginning of the year and then gradually lose the motivation to achieve them. If you've already made some New Year's resolutions, "create small milestones of success and celebrate your progress," Weiss says.
Set small monthly or weekly goals to support larger goals, as the feeling of accomplishment will help you stay motivated.
