South African Transport Minister Sindisiwe Chikunga said that Airports Corporation of South Africa (ACSA), the company that owns and operates nine of South Africa's major airports, has invested more than 21 billion rand (approximately $1.12 billion) to develop airport infrastructure over the next five years.
The investment is primarily intended to upgrade, improve efficiency and compliance measures, to enhance asset availability, airport safety and passenger experience at South African airports.
Ms. Chikunga also announced that ACSA is preparing to begin developing a new cargo terminal at OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg, the largest and busiest international airport in Africa. Infrastructure expansion projects will also be implemented at other South African airports, including those in Durban, George, Cape Town, and Gqeberha, to enhance the capacity and efficiency of these facilities.
