South Africa says Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates have confirmed they will join BRICS, after being invited last year.
"Five of the six invited countries have confirmed their membership in BRICS: Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Ethiopia, Iran, and Egypt," South African Foreign Minister Naledi Pandor said on January 31.
At the summit in Johannesburg last August, BRICS, a bloc comprising China, Russia, Brazil, India, and South Africa, invited the aforementioned five countries, along with Argentina, to join the bloc in order to "reform the outdated world order."
The then-President of Argentina, Alberto Fernandez, said that joining BRICS would open up a "new landscape" for the country.

However, Argentina rejected the invitation to join BRICS on December 29, 2023, just weeks after the new President Javier Milei took office.
"Argentina has written to us stating that they will not act on the previous administration's application for full membership in BRICS. We accept their decision," the South African Foreign Minister said.
President Milei wrote in the letter that his foreign policy "differs from that of his predecessor in many respects. Therefore, some previous decisions will be reviewed." Milei also emphasized Argentina's commitment to strengthening bilateral relations with BRICS members and expressed his desire to meet with the bloc's leaders.
BRICS is a group of emerging economies that account for over 40% of the global population and about a quarter of the world's GDP. South Africa currently holds the chairmanship.
