On the social media platform Weibo, the account of leaker Digital Chat Station stated that Apple is testing a variable aperture camera on the iPhone, which could be featured as early as the iPhone 18 Pro.
Variable aperture allows the camera to adjust the amount of light reaching the sensor. This means that when shooting in a dark environment, the camera can widen the aperture to capture more light, while in a bright environment, the aperture is narrowed to avoid overexposure.
According to MacRumors , this feature also gives users better control over the depth of field, including the sharpness of the surrounding space relative to the subject.
This isn't the first time rumors have surfaced about a variable aperture camera on the iPhone. In December 2024, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo from TF International Securities stated that the main rear camera of the iPhone 18 Pro would have a variable aperture.
By October 2025, ET News (South Korea) reported that Apple planned to equip the next generations of iPhones with this technology. The company is reportedly in discussions to purchase components from suppliers including LG Innotech and Foxconn (sensors), and Luxshare and Sunny Optical (actuators).
Apple has never equipped iPhones with cameras that have variable aperture. From the iPhone 14 Pro to the 17 Pro, the main camera has had a fixed aperture of f/1.78, meaning the lens is always open and takes photos at this aperture.
Samsung previously equipped the Galaxy S9 and S10 (2018-2019) with variable aperture lenses, but due to their thickness and high cost, the technology was removed in 2020.
In addition to the main camera with variable aperture, Digital Chat Station reports that Apple is testing a telephoto camera with a larger aperture for the iPhone 18 Pro.
Currently, the telephoto camera on the iPhone 17 Pro has an aperture of f/2.8. Although the sensor has been upgraded to 48 MP resolution, the aperture size on this camera remains the same as the previous generation.
Similar to other lenses, a large aperture helps telephoto cameras improve light gathering, reduce noise, increase shutter speed, and separate the background.

Other rumors suggest that the iPhone 18 Pro may feature a teleconverter to extend the main lens, improving zoom capabilities.
According to leaker Smart Pikachu , Apple is evaluating the possibility of incorporating this mechanism into the iPhone 18 Pro's camera system. It would function similarly to third-party detachable lenses that users often attach to their iPhones to enhance zoom capabilities.
This change allows the iPhone to achieve greater optical zoom, directly challenging Android competitors, especially Samsung, which is currently at the top.
The iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max are likely to be launched by Apple later this year, along with a foldable iPhone. Meanwhile, the standard iPhone 18 series is expected to debut early next year.
